Three experiments were conducted to test the abortifacient effects of PGF2α analogues on mares during midgestation (average gestation length 141.5 days). The progesterone concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay. In experiment I, five mares recieved an injection of PGF2α analogue (fluprostenol: 500 μg intramuscularly) and a second injection either at 24, 48, of 72 h. Although the progesterone concentration decreased (P < 0.05) an average of 44 per cent in 24 h, none of the pregnancies were terminated. In experiment 2, beginning at least 10 days after experiment I, the same five mares were given PGF2α analogue as follows: 250 μg intravaginally and 500 μg intramuscularly. The treatment was repeated 48 h later. Progesterone concentrations had not increased since experiment 1 and dit not decrease during the 48 h following either injection. In experiment 3, six mares (average gestation length 162 days) were treated every 6 or 12 h with PGF2α analogue (cloprostenol: 375 μg) until expulsion of the fetus occurred at 47 ± 25 h after the initial injection; the mares received an average of 5 treatments. The progesterone concentration averaged 22 ± 7 ng/ml before the initial PGF2α treatment, decreased (P<0.05) to 8.4 ±2.7 ng/ml by 12 h before expulsion and 1–8 ±0.4 ng/ml 12 h after fetal expulsion. The progesterone concentration remained below 1.0 ng/ml for the next 4 days. However, only one of six mares exhibited estrual behavior after induced abortion.

An investigation was undertaken to study two different types of farrowing pens, use being made of well characterized veterinary parameters for the well‐being of piglets. A housing system with a solid floor and straw‐bedding was compared with a partly metal‐slatted floor system. The veterinary parameters we used were mortality, morbidity, and external injuries in piglets. There were slight differences in mortality and morbidity rates between the two housing systems. There were big differences with regard tp the piglets” injury‐index’ of the two housing systems. The straw system was more favourable. The studies show that obervations of external injuries ('Method of Ekesbo') can be used to judge housing systems of piglets in the farrowing house.

The diagnosis and treatment of a case of crimidine poisoning in a dog are described. Presenting signs were seizures and vomiting. The vomitus contained a purple coloured cereal grain. The signs and grain colour were suggestive for a rodenticide with convulsive effects The diagnosis of crimidine poisoning was made by thin layer chromatography and was later confirmed by finding the source of the poison. Except for the administration of Vit B6, the specific antidote for crimidine, general treatment principles for poisoning were followed. The treatment of crimidine poisoning is time consuming and requires intensive care facilities.

Antibiotic concentrations were determined in the lacrimal fluid of sheep following subcutaneous application of penicillin/ dihydrostreptomycin into the lower eyelid, and intramuscular administration of spiramycin base, tiamulin, and oxytetracycline formulations. The penetration of penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin into the lacrimal fluid was poor. The spiramycin and tiamulin concentrations in the lacrimal fluid were 10‐ and 4‐fold higher than in the serum. The peak spiramycin concentration in the lacrimal fluid was 3.4 ±0.8 μg/ml at 8 h post injection (p.i.) and the drug could be detected at least 72 h p. i. For tiamulin and oxytetracycline (OTC) peak concentrations of 1.53 ±0.70 and 1.88 ±1.9 μg/ml, respectively, were achieved in the lacrimal fluid and these drugs could be detected 25 to 30 h p.i. The OTC and tiamulin concentration‐time curves for lacrimal fluid and serum were parallel, whereas for the spiramycin appearance in the lacrimal fluid was delayed.

In a comparative study the clinical efficacy of five different treatments of keratoconjunctivitis infectiosa ovis (KIO) were tested, namely an intramuscular injection of chloramphenicol base (dosage 15 mg/kg), spiramycin base (Suanovil®dosages 10 to 25 mg/kg), oxytetracycline (Engemycine®Forte, Terramycin®LA, dosages respectively 5 and 10 mg/kg), tiamulin (Dynamutulin®, dosage 10 mg/kg) and subcutaneous injection of procaine penicillin G, benzathine penicillin G, and dihydrostreptomycin in the lower eyelid.

The occurrence of keratoconjunctivitis infectiosa ovis (KIO) in the Netherlands was reported by Holland et al. in 1969 for the first time. At present the disease is well known in the Netherlands. Nevertheless there are still questions about the causative agent and the most effective and easiest therapy.

In a commercial swine herd a rise was noted during the summer of 1981 in the number of repeat breeders, mostly four to eight weeks after serving. During the autumn there was a decrease in the litter size at birth and an increase in the number of stillborn and mummified piglets. Several gilts and sows showed a seroconversion against Porcine Parvovirus (PPV), determined by the Haemagglutination Inhibition lest (HI‐test). Characteristic pathological findings were seen in some maturely stillborn and neonatally deceased piglets (up to an age of 28 days); hepatic congestion and necrosis, accummulation of fluid in body cavities, myocarditis, and encephalitis were the most Prominent features. Serological tests for antibodies in blood samples of one sow and body fluids of two stillborn piglets were suggestive of Porcine Parvovirus as the aetiological agent.

Ketoconazole (Nizoral®, Janssen Pharmaceutica) a new systemic antimycotic was tested in dermatomycosis in cats and dogs. The daily dose (10 mg/kg body weight) was administered for 10 or 20 days without any other measures being taken. After the 20‐day treatments new hair growth was observed in 96.7 per cent of the cats and 89.9 percent of the dogs. Clinical cure was complete in 96.8 per cent of the cats and 90.5 per cent of the dogs.
