A clinicopathological study of a neurologic disease in Rottweiler dogs was conducted. Clinical data were available on 16 dogs, 11 of which were examined pathologically. All dogs had a history of progressive gait abnormalities, which had commenced insidiously at an age varying from 1.5 to 3.5 years. In most dogs the fore limbs were affected prior to the hind limbs. At neurologic examination ataxia of all 4 limbs was seen, in some instances accompanied by an apparent paresis. Proprioceptive positioning was delayed whereas spinal reflexes were often hyperactive. Plain and contrast radiographs of the spine did not reveal any compressive lesions in 5 dogs examined. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis in 4 dogs was normal. Electrodiagnostic testing in 3 dogs revealed no abnormalities. At pathologic examination demyelinating lesions were found in the central nervous system. These were largely confined to the cervical spinal cord and brain stem and had a rather characteristic more or less symmetric distribution.

The residual effect of treatment with ivermectin after experimental reinfection in calves was tested. Twenty‐four calves were divided into 6 groups of 4 calves each. All calves received a primary infection of 50,000 larvae of both Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora and 1000 Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae. Calves of group 1 remained untreated, and all other calves were treated 21 days after primary infection (0.2 mg/kg injected subcutaneously). Calves of groups 1 and 2 were slaughtered 7 days later. Calves of groups 3–6 were reinfected with the same number of larvae 3 days, I, 3 and 6 weeks after treatment respectively. Slaughter was 21 days after reinfection. Based on post‐mortem worm counts the efficacy of ivermectin after primary infection was 99.7% for O. ostertagi, 95.1% for C. oncophora and 100% for D. viviparus. A residual effect was present for at least one week, but could not be observed 3 weeks after treatment.

Pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution experiments were conducted in pigs to which sulphadimidine (SDM) was administered intravenously, orally, and intramuscularly at a dosage of 20 mg SDM/kg. SDM was acetylated extensively, but neither hydroxy metabolites nor their derivatives could be detected in plasma, edible tissues or urine. Following i.v. and two oral routes of administration, the N4‐acetylsulphadimidine (N4‐SDM) concentration‐time curve runs parallel to that of SDM. The percentage of N4‐SDM in plasma was in the range between 7 and 13.5% of the total sulphonamide concentration. The bioavailability of SDM administered in a drench was 88.9 ± 5.4 % and administered mixed with pelleted feed for 3 consecutive days it was 48.0 ± 11.5 %. The renal clearance of unbound SDM, which was urine flow related, was 1/7 of that of creatinine, indicating reabsorption of the parent drug. The unbound N4SDM was eliminated three times faster than creatinine, indicating that tubular secretion was the predominant mechanism of excretion.

The effect of replacing dietary sodium chloride by sodium bicarbonate on leg weakness, osteochondrosis and growth in young fattening pigs was studied in two experiments using 104 and 126 animals. The experimental pigs were fed 0.43 % dietary sodium bicarbonate, which replaced the sodium chloride (0.30%), was present in the diets of the control groups.

Glutaraldehyde‐treated whole cell antigens (GA.WcA) of Dermatophilus congolensis induced in guinea pigs immunological memory in contrast to cell wall antigens treated similarly (GA.CwA). However, GA.WcA could not induce a secondary response in animals primed with untreated WcA while GA.CwA on the other hand did stimulate a secondary response in animals primed with untreated CwA. Primary antibody production was induced by both GA.CwA and untreated CwA to a similar level in their respective hosts but it was the secondary response that was found similar in response to GA.WcA and untreated WcA. However, both untreated WcA and CwA induced primary and secondary antibody production in their respective hosts though these responses were considerably higher in guinea pigs given untreated CwA. This study showed that both untreated and GA‐treated antigens of D. congolensis are capable of stimulating antibody production in guinea pigs but they differ in their levels of stimulation.

The clinical and pathological features of extrahepatic cholestasis in 19 dogs are presented. The condition was most often caused by partial or complete occlusion of the choledochal duct due to neoplastic diseases (12 cases), inflammatory processes (3 cases), or eventration and incarceration of the liver (I case). In only three cases was the condition due to intraluminal obstruction of the choledochal duct.

Several aspects of meat quality are briefly discussed, outlining the complex of parameters affecting meat quality as a whole. Particular attention is paid to the main sensory meat quality characteristics, which can be assessed analytically, and are known to be related to consumers’ appreciation, when buying, preparing and consuming meat. After some compositional and structural characteristics of muscle have been outlined, the major physiologicalfactors effecting the conversion of muscle into meat are discussed. Finally commonly used methods for the assessment of sensory meat quality are reviewed.

Two cases of Babesia bovis, a parasite associated with the tick Boophilus microplus, are reported for the first time from the central part of Zambia. It is concluded that infected B. microplus ticks are occasionally introduced into central Zambia by tick‐infested cattle from the north‐eastern part of the country where B. bovis is endemic. The spread of B. microplus in Southern Africa in a westward direction is discussed and related to the epidemiology of bovine babesiosis in Zambia.
