Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out in sheep by means of transabdominal linear‐array real‐time ultrasound scanning. Animals were restrained standing, and the transducer was placed on the hairless area of the ventral abdominal wall just in front of the udder.

Pregnancy diagnoses were performed under farm conditions in 201 cows (Hungarian Red Pied and crosbreds with Holstein) between 21 and 70 days after last insemination date, using a linear‐array real‐time ultrasound scanner with a 3.0 MHz rectal tranducer. Identification of (a) sharply demarcated black area(s) and/or an embryo within the uterus were used as criterions for pregnancy.

Between days 24 and 32 after mating/insemination, 881 pigs (785 pregnant and 96 not‐pregnant) were tested for pregnancy on a commercial farm with a linear‐array real‐time ultrasound scanner. 5–7 Days later, 785 of these animals (708 pregnant and 77 not‐pregnant) were tested again with A‐mode equipment by farm employees. Confirmation of pregnancy was based on recorded farrowings or abortions: confirmation of non‐pregnancy was based on return to oestrus and rebreeding, recorded non‐farrowing, or inspection of the uterus of culled animals at the slaughterhouse. From the number of correct positive (a), incorrect positive (b), correct negative (c) and incorrect negative (d) diagnoses, a sensitivity (a/a + d) of 100% versus 97.5%, a specificity (c/c + b) of 90.6 versus 55.8%, a positive predictive value (a:a + b) of 98.9% versus 95.3% and a negative predictive value (c:c + d) of 100% versus 70.5% were calculated for the real‐time ultrasound technique versus A‐mode technique.

The feel of horses, sheep, and goats of different breeds and from many different localities were examined for Chorioptes bovis. In horses, mites were mainly found in the Belgian and Frisian breeds (40% and 62% infected, respectively). In sheep and goats, respectively 63% and 86% were infected. In horses as well as in sheep and goats, mange‐lesions were rarely seen. A number of sheep and goats were examined for mites and lesions quantitatively. In sheep all mites were restricted to the region close to the accessory digits and the claws. In goats the average number of mites was higher than in sheep, and mites could be found on all locations of the feet at least as far as the carpal and tarsal joint. Both in sheep and goats the biggest density of mites was found just below the accessory digits. When crusts were present, they were generally small and hidden under the coat. In sheep, which were housed for a long period, crusts were seen more often and were more distinct than in pastured animals. A negative correlation between the number of mites and the presence and extensiveness of crusts was observed A possible explanation for this phenomenon is suggested. From the results of this study it is clear that there is no necessity to list chorioptic mange in sheep and goats as a notifiable disease.

Following intravenous administration of an oxytetracycline‐HC 1 and an oxytetracycline‐dihydrate formulation to dairy cows, no statistical difference could be found between the pharmacokinetic parameters, derived from the three‐compartment model, of these preparations. Urinary recovery was continued for a period of 72 h following intravenous or intramuscular OTC administration.

In plasma and milk the oxytetracycline (OTC) concentrations were determined following a single intramuscular administration of eight 10%‐formulations to dairy cows at a dose of approximately 5 mg/kg. Two of these formulations were injected intravenously to obtain reference values of the drug's pharmacokinetic parameters. The eight formulations were compared and evaluated pharmacokinetically with respect to absorption rate, peak plasma and milk OTC concentrations, biological half‐life, and relative bioavailability. The mean maximum plasma OTC concentrations, ranging from 2.0 to 4. 1 μg/ml, were achieved between 4 and 12 hours post injection, depending on the formulation involved. The mean maximum milk OTC concentrations, in the range between 0.92 and 1.43 μg/ml, were achieved 12 to 24 h p. i. The OTC milk concentration‐time profile ran parallel to the OTC plasma concentration‐time profile.

Data are presented on the incidence of various streptococcal infections in pigs in the Netherlands. 314 Strains isolated in the course of routine post‐mortem diagnosis were examined. The most frequently occurring streptococcus wasS. subacidus(bio) type II which was isolated in 31.2% of the cases.
