In this paper we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using histometric and chemical methods for detecting collagenous connective tissue in meat products. Twelve samples of different kinds of smoked sausage meat of known recipe were examined chemically and by two histometric procedures. The results obtained with the histometric procedures were almost identical (r = .96) and there was a strong correlation (r = .88) between the results of one histometric procedure and those obtained with the chemical method.

Spinal nematodosis in a four‐year‐old donkey is described. The animal showed progressive hindlimb paresis of sudden onset. Necropsy revealed extensive degeneration and inflammation in the lumbosacral part of the spinal cord, caused by a nematode larva of the suborder Strongylina, probably L4 or L5 ofStrongylus vulgaris.

The mean arterial PO2value measured in blood obtained by puncture of the brachial artery of 20 calves with acute clinical signs of a bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) infection was 8.4 + 1.9 kPa, The values differed significantly from arterial PO2values of eleven healthy calves (mean 14.2 ± 1.5 kPa).

A possible association of a chronic indurative mastitis with mvv (maedi visna virus) infection in sheep was investigated. Sheep of four flocks (group A), in which insufficient lamb growth apparently associated with insufficient milk production and probably related to udder induration, was a serious problem, were clinically examined in mid‐lactation. The results were compared with four mvv‐free flocks (group B) without such complaints.

Since the end of the last century many investigations with electroanaesthesia have been performed in animals and man. The interest in this method of anaesthesia has emerged because anaesthesia is achieved immediately after the onset of the current and the recovery is very rapid after cutting off of the current. Recently a battery operated apparatus became available (Feenix Stockstill®) for application of electroanaesthesia and electroimmobilisation under field conditions, and an experiment was conducted with 10 calves, 10 sheep, and 9 pigs, which were equipped with EEG and ECG electrodes, to check the analgesic and other practical effects of the apparatus. The duration of current administration was 20 minutes. Three animals of each species were used as control animals.

Following an investigation concerning the well‐being of piglets in a farrowing house, the study was continued in a rearing house. The same parameters were used: mortality, morbidity, and external injuries. Two housing systems were involved: one with a fully slatted concrete floor and one with a solid concrete floor with straw bedding. The investigation was carried out three limes in each system, with approximately 550 piglets each time.

After reviewing of the sources of lead poisoning in birds, the diagnostic value of several clinicopathologic parameters for the diagnosis of plumbism in birds is discussed. These parameters include venous lead concentration, plasma δ‐aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase concentration (ALA‐D), aminolaevulinic‐acid (ALA) excretion in urine, free erythrocytic protoporphyrin (FEPP) and zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) concentrations in venous blood, and the percentage of fluorocytes, reticulocytes, and erthyrocytes with basophilic stippling in peripheral blood.

The diagnostic value of the intravenous injection of 1.6 or 3.2 ml of johnin was evaluated in a total of 116 cattle. The sensitivity was 84% with clinically suspect cattle. A general reaction occurred frequently as well as elevation of body temperature (average 1.47° C). The observance of a general reaction was a good additional source of information when evaluating the test.
