摘要:
This research was carried out to analyse the visits specialists of the Dutch Animal Health Service made to growing and fattening pig farms. The type and frequency of the visits and identified herd‐health management factors that did not meet accepted standards were investigated. In total 373 visit reports were studied.

摘要:
In dogs requiring a midline celiotomy, closure of the rectus sheath with a continuous polyglyconate looped suture and closure of the skin with stainless steel staples (group 1, 20 dogs) were compared with closure of the rectus sheath with interrupted polyglyconate sutures and closure of the skin with a continuous subdermal polyglactin suture (group 2, 20 dogs) with respect to speed, safety, and costs. The subcutis was closed with a continuous polyglactin suture in all dogs.

摘要:
Adaptation of an in‐foot shoe force sensor and the gait analysis system ‘Fscan’ makes it possible to monitor the distribution of the vertical forces under the equine foot in motion. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of two different trimmings on forces under the foot during the trot. The first one increased the height of the lateral hoof wall and the second one restored the mediolateral balance of the foot. These two trimmings were examined by using a radiographical method that quantifies the interphalangeal articular asymmetries due to asymmetrical bearing. The location of the centre of force of the weight‐bearing foot and the distribution of the forces applied to the lateral and medial solar surfaces during a stride were analyzed. After optimal trimming, the centre of force of the weight‐bearing foot tended to approach the centre of the palmar figure, perpendicular to the distal interphalangeal joint centre. The sum of the forces recorded under the lateral and medial parts respectively of the foot during one stride tended to balance out after corrective trimming.

摘要:
This paper reviews 27 cases of polycystic disease of the kidneys and/or liver in cats. The multiple cysts in the kidneys were rounded in all but one case, as described in adult polycystic kidney disease in humans. In 68% of the cats presented with polycystic kidneys, there were also cystic changes of the liver (uni‐ or multilocular cysts and/or congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF)). In 1 cat polycystic changes of kidneys and liver were accompanied by cysts in the pancreas. In 5 cases there was severe pancreas fibrosis. Twenty‐one of the 27 cats were Persian or Persian‐crossbred.

摘要:
In this study we investigated a panel of 20 polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies specific for chicken cells and tissues for cross‐reactivity with other avian species, i.e. turkey, duck and quail, using immunoperoxidase staining on cryostat sections. The number of cross‐reacting antibodies was highest for turkey (12/20) and quail (10/20) and lowest for duck (5/20), reflecting the phylogenetic distance between these birds. In ducks only antibodies specific for mononuclear phagocytes and for stromal molecules in mesenchym, muscle cells, endothelial, and epithelial cells cross‐reacted. In turkeys and quails cross‐reaction was seen with antibodies against T‐helper lymphocytes, IgM‐ and IgG‐positive B cells and plasma cells, and mononuclear phagocytes. In addition, most antibodies specific for stromal molecules reacted against turkey or quail molecules. The panel of reacting antibodies can be used for research into the natural and specific defence mechanisms of turkeys and quails.

摘要:
The prevalence ofBorreliaspecies infection was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 138 ticks collected from dogs which were walked regularly in the wooded areas near the city of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The PCR amplified the spacer region between the 5S and 23 S rRNA genes, and theBorreliaspecies was identified by hybridization with specific probes.Borrelia burgdorferisensu lato was present in 20 of 138 (14.5%) ticks. Four species were identified:B. burgdorferisensu stricto (n=8), B.afzelii(n=4), B.garinii(n=2), and B.valaisiana(n=2). One PCR product was non‐typeable. Three ticks contained more than one species, all includingB. burgdoferisensu stricto, and one tick even contained four species. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in prevalence ofB. burgdorferisensu stricto between non‐engorged ticks (either questing or attached) and semi‐engorged ticks, 12% (10 of 85) and 2% (1 of 53), respectively

摘要:
Chronic renal failure as consequence of renal dysplasia was diagnosed in three young adult Dutch kooiker dogs (Dutch decoy dogs). Two animals were anorectic from an early age and were thinner than healthy dogs of the same breed. All three were presented because of apathy and weakness. Laboratory examination revealed anaemia and uraemia. One dog was presented with severe dehydration and died during emergency treatment. One dog was euthanatised because of a poor prognosis, and one was given a low‐protein diet. This dog survived for 7 months after the diagnosis of chronic renal failure. At necropsy all three animals had shrunken, pale, and firm kidneys that showed microscopical lesions characteristic of canine renal dysplasia, such as asynchronous differentiation of nephrons, persistent immature mesenchyme, persistent metanephric ducts, and adenomatoid proliferation of the tubular epithelium. Secondary degenerative and inflammatory changes consisted of interstitial fibrosis and predominantly lymphocytic/plasmacytic inflammation. This is the first report of renal dysplasia in the Dutch kooiker dog. The disease should be included in the differential diagnosis in young Dutch kooiker dogs with signs of chronic renal failure. The presentation of three cases of this rare disease in this breed, which is based on a rather small gene pool, suggests that it is a familial or hereditary nephropathy.
