A breeding experiment was carried out in a group of Shetland ponies in order to investigate the heredity of congenital lateral patellar (sub) luxation. A breeding herd was established and consisted of stallions and mares acquired at different times. Some were free from, and others were affected by lateral patellar (sub)luxation in either one or both femoropatellar joints.

Intratracheal inoculation of 2 Belgian H3N2‐influenza viral strains, isolated from sick swine in the field, caused high fever, anorexia and dyspnoe in unvaccinated swine. The strains are related to the human A/Port Chalmers/ 1/73 (H3N2)‐strain. In a limited study, 2 subunit vaccines, both derived from the human A/Philippines/2/82 (H3N2)‐strain, were tested for efficacy in protecting swine against these Belgian field isolates. Vaccine A was a commercial vaccine, vaccine B an experimental vaccine. For evaluation of the efficacy of the vaccines, clinical as well as virological parameters were used. It was found that 2 spaced injections of the experimental vaccine (B) resulted in very high serum hemagglutination‐inhibition (HI) titres against the Philippines‐strain. Nevertheless, only partial protection was obtained, as indicated by the milder clinical signs and the decreased viral replication at challenge. One injection of the experimental vaccine (B) and 2 spaced injections of the commercial vaccine (A) dit not result in any protection at challenge, even though moderate HI titres against the Philippines‐strain were obtained. It was concluded that if an H3N2‐strain is included in vaccines for use in swine, a strain should be selected which is identical or very closely related to the strain(s) prevalent in the swine population of the country in which the vaccine will be used.

To improve the herd health and production management on swine breeding farms the Department of Herd Health and Ambulatory Clinic (University of Utrecht) developed a computer package. The basic package includes action lists, physical performance reports, analysis and economic programs. During the development of the software package it was emphasised that the programs should be user friendly (easy to handle, with no special codes), and should have an enormous flexibility to guarantee easy updating and a long life for the whole package.

The Department of Herd Health and Ambulatory Clinic of the Veterinary Faculty (State University of Utrecht, The Netherlands) has developed the VAMPP package for swine breeding farms. The present article is the second of two articles describing the VAMPP‐system. The objective of this computer package is to improve productivity on swine breeding farms through automated data processing and interpretation and action based on the computer output. The output produced by the VAMPP‐programs is described in the present article and consists of: action lists, physical performance reports, analysis graphs and tables and economic reports.

To analyse the results of a vaccination on the first day of age against Newcastle disease (ND) and on the 17th day of age against Infectious Bronchitis (IB) resp. with spray vaccines with Clone 30 and H120 vaccine. These vaccinations are compared in field circumstances with other vaccination methods. A serological examination and challenge test were used to be informed about the response and protection.

A field trial was carried out with Nobi‐Vac AR vaccine in 11 swine breeding herds. One herd suffered from severeB. bronchiseptica (BB+)rhinitis in piglets, while no clinical Atrophic Rhinitis (AR) was observed. Ten herds were described as AR problem herds, because clinical AR was observed for at least 1 year in spite of the fact that medication of sows and piglets was carried out and adequate housing and management systems were available in most herds. BB+ was isolated in 9 of these 10 farms and the AR pathogenicP. multocida(PM+) in all these farms.

The depletion of sulphadimidine(SDM) and its N4‐acetyl and hydroxy metabolites was studied in eggs laid by hens after administration of either a single or multiple oral dosages of 100 mg SDM/kg. During medication and until I day after the last dose, the SDM and its metabolite concentrations in the egg white exceeded those in the egg yolk and reflected the plasma levels. In the period starting 2 days after the (last) dosage, the SDM concentration in the yolk became higher than in the egg white, and the drug depletion curves ran parallel. The mean maximum amount of SDM found in the whole egg was 1500 μg after a single and 1280 pg after multiple dosage. In eggs, traces of the N4‐acetyl and 6‐methylhydroxy metabolites could be detected (mainly in the egg white), and their concentrations were approximately 40 times lower than those of the parent drug. A highly significant correlation (P< 0.005) was found between the development stage of the oöcyte at the time of (last) medication and the amount of SDM found in the egg that developed from it. A period of 7 or 8 days after the (last) dosage of 100 mg SDM/kg/day is required to obtain SDM levels below 0.1 μg/g egg.

A retrospective study on the results of urethrostomy in 28 small ruminants was made. Ten animals were euthanised during surgery. In the 18 remaining animals short‐term results were good. Recurrence of symptoms occurred in 8 animals (45%). Five animals were operated a second time, leading to 4recurrences. Two animals were operated a third time and remained free of symptoms.

A technique for catheterising male small ruminants is described. The barrier formed by the presence of the urethral diverticulum is avoided by the use of a pre‐curved catheter. The technique enables application of contrast studies of bladder and urethra in animals suspected of urolithiasis. Differentiation between cystitis and obstructive urolithiasis is possible and the indications for urethrostomy can be reduced.
