Diaphragmatic hernia frequently occurs as a consequence of traffic accidents. The ‘pendulating’ or ‘inspiratory abdominal’ respiration and the sinistro‐ or dextrocardia are often diagnostic. Palpation of the apex beat proved to be reliable way of determining whether median, left‐ or right‐sided thoracotomy was indicated.

A number of clinically important features of isoflurane anaesthesia were studied in comparison to those of halothane. Two groups of dogs were used. After light premedication, anaesthesia was induced by mask, and both groups of dogs were maintained for 30 minutes at 1.5 × MAC value of either halothane or isoflurane in a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide (50:50). All animals were ventilating spontaneously.

The efficacy of the morantel sustained‐release bolus (MSRB) in controlling gastrointestinal parasites in first‐season grazing calves was evaluated on a dairy cattle farm in Belgium. The calves grazed a pasture which had been used by bolus‐treated animals in the three previous years. The effect of bolus administration was determined with respect to live weight gain, faecal egg shedding, herbage larval counts, serum pepsinogen levels and ELISA antibody titres.

ACTH (μg kg‐1i.v.) and prednisolone (1 μg‐1i.v.) caused a moderate but statistically significant inhibition of rumen contractions, whereas no effects on heart rate and body temperature were observed. Both hormones induced hyperglycaemia and leucocytosis, characterised by moderate lymphopenia and a profound increase in the number of circulating neutrophils. A significant decrease in plasma iron and increase in plasma zinc concentrations were observed.

The intramuscular administration of the cell‐free culture filtrates of two AR pathogenicPasteurella multocida(PM) isolates caused Atrophic Rhinitis (AR) in piglets. The culture filtrate of a non‐AR‐pathogenic PM isolate did not cause AR lesions after intramuscular injection. The severity of the AR lesions appeared to be correlated with the quantity of injected toxin. As the quantity of administered toxin increased, the piglets showed clinical growth retardation, icterus and mortality. Besides lesions typical of AR, severe liver degeneration was observed at necropsy; this liver degeneration was sometimes accompanied by fibrosis.

The disposition of chloramphenicol (CAP) and of its glucuronide metabolite in plasma and milk was studied following a single intramuscular injection of a chloramphenicol base formulation (Amicole®Forte; product A) and of chloramphenicol sodium succinate (product B) to dairy cows. The dose applied of both formulations was equivalent to 50 mg CAP base/kg body weight. The HPLC determined CAP concentrations were microbiologically active. Product A revealed 30% higher plasma CAP peak concentrations (13.0 vs 9.0 μg/ml) and 36% larger areas under the plasma concentration‐ time curves than product B, whereas their absorption and elimination half‐lives were of the same order of magnitude. In the onset phase (during 4 h p.i.) unhydrolysed CAP sodium succinate could be detected in plasma and the glucuronide fraction was 26% of the parent drug. After 25 h p.i. the glucuronide fraction equalled that of the parent drug.

A review of the literature concerning the application of electromyography and electroneurography in canine neurology is presented. Measurements of amplitude and duration of motor unit potentials in normal dogs varied largely in the various reports. It was therefore concluded that these measurements are of limited clinical value. The results of motor and sensory nerve conduction studies in normal dogs are summarised. The differences between the methods used are discussed. It is concluded that variations in reported normal values are due mainly to differences in method.

This review describes research conducted from 1900–1983 on trypanosomiasis due toTrypanosoma evansiin Indonesia. Clinical signs and post‐mortem findings in horses, cattle, buffaloes, pigs and dogs, experimental transmission tests to establish possible surra vectors in Indonesia, and research on chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis are discussed.
