Laboratory testing in N. Ireland for the illegal growth promoting agent, clenbuterol (CBL), is centralized at the Veterinary Sciences Division, Belfast. During the past 6 years a variety of testing schemes have evolved to determine the level of abuse of this drug in the local meat industry.

The disposition and urinary excretion of ciprofloxacin (CIP) following intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration of 7.5 mg/kg body weight in sheep (n = 5) was studied. The intravenous plasma concentration curve was best described pharmacokinetically by a two‐compartment open model, while the intramuscular administration data fitted better to a one‐compartment open model. Mean elimination half‐lives after IV and IM administration were 72 and 184 minutes, respectively. The absorption of intramuscularly administered CIP in sheep was fast: maximal plasma concentration (Cmax) was reached quickly (tmax 31.93 min) and attained values of 0.69 ± 0.27 mg/l. The bioavailability was 49%. The urinary data showed a significant decrease in the elimination rate constant of CIP when CIP was administered intramuscularly. The other parameters calculated did not display differences between the two routes of administration. The results obtained suggest that when CIP was administered by the IM route in the assayed dose, it was able to maintain serum concentrations above the MIC of most common pathogens over an 8‐hour period.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and primary hypothyroidism are most often diagnosed in middle‐aged and older dogs of large and giant breeds. We hypothesized that the frequency of primary hypothyroidism may be higher in dogs with AF than in those without AF.

Fertility indices, such as non‐return rate and number of services per conception, have worsened significantly over the past few years. Because oestrus detection is one of the major factors influencing these indices, this study was performed to determine whether, how long, and at what time dairy cows show signs of oestrus in their behaviour. Two high producing herds with about 40 open cows were observed for 30 minutes every 2 hours for 6 weeks. The various signs of oestrus were recorded. The milk progesterone concentration was monitored daily to detect ovulation. A scale (Table 2) was composed according to the frequency of these symptoms during and between oestrous periods. This scale was used in order to determine which cows were in oestrus. Each oestrous symptom was given a score and the scores were summed for a 24‐hour period. If a score of >100 points was reached within a 24‐h period, the cow was considered to be in oestrus.

The relationships between heat production, body temperature, and body posture (standing/lying) were studied in goats suffering from trypanosomiasis. Sixteen goats were selected and infected with 1 × 106Trypanosoma vivaxparasites and 8 goats served as controls. In week 2, 4, and 6 after infection heat production, body posture, and body temperature were measured at 15‐minute intervals. Heat production was higher (P<0.01) in infected animals compared with control animals (342, respectively 306 kJ•kg‐0.75 .d‐1), body temperature was also higher (P<0.001) in infected goats (39.78°C, respectively 38.51°C). The standing related energy costs per day were lower in infected animals (27 respectively 36 kJ#lbkg‐0.75 .d‐1). Infected animals, therefore, masked part of the energy costs of infection by reducing the standing time. The heat production of infected animals was increased by 21 kJ .kg‐0.75.d‐1per 1°C fever (7% increase). During periods of standing, body temperature increased with time, whereas during lying periods, it decreased. The number of standing periods was increased in infected animals. It was discussed whether postural behaviour is influenced by thermoregulatory mechanisms.

An 11‐year‐old Arabian mare had sudden signs of colic 10 days post partum. Rectal examination revealed a large mass in the abdomen. The mare was successfully operated on for a granulosa cell tumour of 31.5 kg. The large abdominal wound healed by primary intention.

This report describes nine unrelated cats with acute idiopathic polyneuropathy. All cats presented with acutely developing tetraparesis or tetraparalysis and loss of spinal reflexes. Seven cats recovered completely within 4 to 6 weeks, without any medication. Two years after complete recovery, none of these cats had had a relapse. In the acute stage, two cats were euthanized because of respiratory complications. Postmortem examination was performed on one of these cats and revealed generalized peripheral motor polyneuropathy. The clinical signs in these cats were identical to those of the Guillain‐Barré syndrome in humans.

The breeding and finishing pig populations in four Animal Health Service regions in the Netherlands were monitored with respect to pseudorabies virus (PRV) seroprevalence. Analysis of data of the seroprevalence survey of 1994 indicated that two samples per herd was sufficient to estimate the seroprevalence in both the sow and finishing pig populations. In the northern, eastern, southern, and western re‐ gions, 115, 645, 940, and 218 sow herds and 114, 1036, 954, and 323 pig finishing herds were sampled, respectively. In the breeding pig population, the PRV‐seroprevalence decreased from 27% to 17% in the eastern region, from 32% to 17% in the southern region, from 18% to 12% in the western region, and from 10% to 6% in the northern region. In the finishing pig population, the PRV‐seroprevalence decreased from 15% to 6% in the eastern region, from 19% to 6% in the southern region, and from 12% to 5% in the western region. There was no significant difference in PRV seroprevalence in finishing pigs in the northern region between the survey of 1994 and 1995.

In modern high‐yielding dairy herds fertility is of major economic importance. In order to gain maximum profit, calving intervals should not exceed 365 days. The achievement of a 365‐day calving interval requires an early resumption of ovarian activity, an excellent oestrus detection, and a high first‐service conception rate. Especially the inability to detect oestrus and to mate the cows by 60 to 80 days after calving is a common problem among dairy farmers nowadays. In this article a review is given about the occurrence, causes, treatment, and prevention of post‐partum anoestrus in dairy cows.
