摘要:
AbstractThis paper takes a broad overview of the reliability and safety engineering practice as it is commonly exercised in the aerospace and military industries today, especially with respect to complex electronic equipment which typically includes considerable software content. A general deficiency is noted with regard to the system‐level approach to reliability. It would appear that the system‐level reliability activities are given less attention than is needed, while excessive emphasis is placed on component micro‐physics, component failure models, and various component‐oriented analyses. Systems‐level reliability topics, which predominate in the equipment reliability which is actually observed, are sometimes ignored by reliability engineers. Methods and practical philosophies to re‐establish a solid system engineering foundation for contemporary reliability practice, which have been developed through the authors' experience in the field, are presented. Finally, an example analysis is shown to illustrate t

摘要:
AbstractThe concept of a computer program's ‘hazard rate profile’ is introduced. A software fault's hazard rate is the amount the fault contributes to the overall program failure rate. The hazard rate profile describes the relationship between the program's failure rate and fault content by summarizing the relative proportion of software fault hazard rates that fall into different hazard rate classes. The usefulness of the hazard rate profile concept is shown by applying it to the tasks of software reliability prediction, growth modelling and allocat

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents the similarities and differences between hardware, software and system reliability. Relative contributions to system failures are shown for software and hardware and failure and recovery propensities are also discussed. Reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) concepts have been broadly developed for software reliability than hardware reliability. Extending these software concepts to hardware and system reliability helps in examining the reliability of complex systems. The paper concludes with assurance techniques for defending against faults. Most of the techniques discussed originate in software reliability but apply to all aspects of a system. Also, the effects of redundancy on overall system availability are shown.

摘要:
AbstractThe issue of human–computer interface quality has been brought currently into focus due to (a) a change in the character of users who dominate the computer market, (b) the availability of expertise in design for usability and its assurance, and (c) the finally recognized business benefits for vendors of user friendly equipment. Because the underlying human factors expertise belongs to the category of enabling generic quality assurance technologies, the quality management and engineering communities must master this new issue, and related knowledge and methods. The objective of this review article is to aid the quality professionals to respond successfully to this challenge by presenting the fundamentals of human factors engineering, its role in the design for usability process, and the associated methods of assuring quality of the human–computer interf

摘要:
AbstractProper validation and release of a newly developed product into the market‐place at the minimum supplier cost requires a robust deterministic system. It must characterize cost elements and recommend optimum introduction points in support of total quality management. The economic point of truncation (EPOT) process fulfils the requirements for this system. It integrates pre‐ and post‐release problem resolution costs with the rates of problem discovery, latent problems and product shipping into a product life cycle model. The model simulates the cost accrual for problem resolution during the validation, release and product shipment periods. Model execution results in a characterized life cycle indicating the optimum duration of product validation that minimizes total problem resolution

摘要:
AbstractNo one software reliability growth model has ever been shown to work well in all circumstances. This paper presents our evaluation results for two case studies in which the Akaike information criterion (AIC) was used. The AIC not only selects the best model among several reliability models, but also possess favourable properties that practitioners like to see in their software reliability modelling practices. These properties include simplicity, accuracy and ease of application. We propose using the Akaike information criterion to select the best model for each software system.

摘要:
AbstractFault tolerant systems provide challenges to the reliability prediction process. This paper introduces a prediction method based on the identification of factors affecting system reliability, and on categorization of system performance classes. Computational methods are presented for analysis of factor levels and system reliability performance. Examples and application results are provided.

摘要:
AbstractA major challenge for the computer industry is the need for the development and implementation of an engineering languge which provides continuous linkages and measurement between the customer and all engineering functions internal to the company. Such a language would allow information solution developers and information service providers to be able to continuously monitor the quality and reliability performance of integrated hardware and software products during the complete product life cycle. A quantitative engineering language needs to be developed to provide seamless and continuous linkages between the customer—the user of integrated computer systems—and all of the engineering development and manufacturing functions tasked with designing and building solutions which meet customer needs. A methodology is proposed which addresses this challenge by the implementation of two metrics: total defects per unit (TDU) and the annual rate of events (ARE). These two metrics can measure all hardware, software and computer integration events during the total product life cycle. A methodology is presented which provides a rigorous translation of the ARE metric, monitored at the customer site, into the traditional reliability metrics used by engineering and manufacturing. Algorithms are presented which directly translate AREs into mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time between parts replacement (MTBPR) and mean time between system interruptions (MTBSI). The ARE metric meets the customer requirement of being able to clearly focus on the reliability and availability performance of total systems as a result of hardware and software components, the user interface, and environmental factors. The paper discusses the development and application of integrated TDU and ARE metrics and shows how the total product life cycle quality and reliability of a complex integrated computer and communications solution can be efficiently monitored and managed for improvement during design, manufacturing, and installation performance in an integrated customer environm
