摘要:
The use of natural gas cooling equipment such as engine-driven chillers for air conditioning commercial buildings is known to provide operating cost savings over conventional electric chillers in many regions of the country. To be an economically viable alternative, business managers normally require that the actual savings from using gas cooling must be sufficient to pay back the higher first cost premium of gas chillers in a time period usually not exceeding three years. Simple payback analysis alone does not provide the financial information necessary to make optimal long term investment decisions for central cooling plant improvements. To provide a complete picture of alternative investments, simple payback results can be effectively used in conjunction with other financial criteria such as return on investment, internal rate of return, and net present value. When evaluated in these terms, projects with even four to five year payback often exceed industry financial returns on investment and internal rate of return. This article examines four case studies to demonstrate that this often does occur.

摘要:
This article highlights a very important aspect of a broader effort which addresses the post-implementation follow-up of a total assessment audit (TAA) performed at a mid-size Iowa foundry by the Iowa State University's Center for Building Energy Research (ISUCBER). One of the major goals of a TAA is to analyze and document the impact of implementing energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement opportunities at a facility. The main focus of this study is the replacement of a coke-fired cupola melting operation with one which utilizes electric induction furnaces (EIFs) instead. This work contrasts the cupola-based melting operation with the EIF based operation. The comparison is made on the basis of production schedules, energy usage, and environmental considerations. A cost analysis based on energy utilization and labor cost differences is also presented.

摘要:
The traditional approach to power factor correction in a facility is to add capacitors to individual loads such as motors and fluorescent lighting circuits, to add a capacitor bank with switching to a major distribution panel, or to add a capacitor bank with switching to the power input panel from the utility lines. Recently it has been shown that careful selection of high-efficiency motors for a facility can result in new motors with a significantly higher power factor than the motors they replaced. This article compares and discusses the cost-effectiveness of installing capacitors on individual motors with the cost-effectiveness of installing high-efficiency, high power factor motors.

摘要:
Energy and demand cost savings using an engine-driven air compressor are determined based on average utility rates for four different regions of the country. Net heat recovery cost savings from an engine-driven air compressor is also investigated.
