摘要:
This article presents the verified results of a pump system optimization project at a major midwestern brewery. A 150-horsepower “sweet water” pump circulates a glycol/water solution to cool tanks of beer during fermentation. To keep the pump from overloading the motor, the discharge throttling valve was kept mostly closed, reducing flow and increasing pressure drop. The result was inadequate cooling and energy waste. A systems analysis showed that trimming the impeller would cut the required pumping energy by more than half. The impeller was trimmed and the energy savings paid for the entire project, including the systems analysis, in only six months. Further optimization efforts are currently underway on this system.

摘要:
While a mountain of press has attacked halogen torchieres regarding safety concerns, little attention has been paid to their massive energy consumption. At LBNL, a series of commercial 300-Watt tungsten halogen torchieres have been studied in order to determine their energy use, power quality, and photometric performance. This work has served as the background for an ongoing program aimed at developing novel high-efficiency torchieres using compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

摘要:
This article examines four opportunities to reduce building energy consumption that the author believes are under-utilized by energy engineers: unglazed transpired collectors, driveline chiller conversions, hourly electric consumption data, and building commissioning.
