摘要:
The U.S. metal-casting industry has undergone two decades of consolidation and overseas competition that has left it leaner, smarter, and more competitive. Energy use in particular has re-eived a lot of attention because it is one of the top costs of manufacturing. However, the industry still has room for significant energy savings by taking advantage of proven strategies and technology. Many of these strategies are low and no-cost measures.

摘要:
This article describes an extended assessment of a manufacturing plant. The assessment was extended by adding monitoring of selected electrical systems in the plant with portable data loging equipment, making two additional plant visits to install and remove equipment, and identifying possible assessment recommendations for later investigation. Monitoring identified three recommendations about equipment being left on that likely would not have been identified during a usual assessment, and provided data for quantification of savings. Plant management identified a desirable operational change from the monitored data. In addition, the additional time spent in the plant increased the potential recommendation list and the final recommendation list by about a factor of two.

摘要:
A case study evaluates the economics of installing a staged evaporative cooling system in a factory in the southeastern USA. The effective temperature at the plant floor is predicted for each working hour from typical meteorological year data. The analysis accounts for internal loads and moisture evaporated by the manufacturing process. Worker productivity is estimated from the effective temperature. Several building loads and evaporative cooling system designs are considered. The results show that evaporative air conditioning can improve worker productivity and profit margins in manufacturing facilities that have high internal loads, high ventilation requirements, or other plant-specific conditions that would make conventional air conditioning uneconomical.

摘要:
The DOE-supported University of Tennessee Industrial Assess ment Center (UTIAC) utilizes engineering faculty-student teams to perform in-plant assessments for regional small-to mediumsized industrial manufacturing plants. Since 1993, the focus of the program has been broadened from energy conservation to include waste minimization as an area in which recommendations are made.
