According to long‐term follow‐up studies of people diagnosed schizophrenic, one half to two thirds will become normal and be back in the community after a period of years. With evidence that schizophrenia is reversible, professions involved in social control and those doing therapy face new responsibilities. The reader of this commentary on Haley's paper by Stein will note that Stein refers to Haley as “the author of the critiqued paper” or “ACP,” rather than by name. This unusual style was occasioned by the Editor's decision that Stein should comment on the paper without any knowledge of its authorship, in order that the focus of Stein's comments be on the substance of that paper and that his comments not be influenced by who had written it. The notion of the “psychosomatic” family continues to enjoy uncritical acceptance in the absence of promised data and despite its dependence on an outmoded view of how psychosocial factors are involved in illness. We review the decline of psychosomatic models of illness that assume that arousal is the only or primary means by which psychosocial factors influence illness. Focusing on brittle diabetes, we note the potential for family theorists to develop more adequate models of poor self‐care and medical crises as interactional tactics, as dynamic efforts to solve problems, define relationships, and influence others, even if they are costly and self‐defeating. This study explores the reactions of 202 randomly selected clinical members of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) to a variety of ethical dilemma situations which examine what family therapists are doing in their work when confronted with these difficult situations. Eight of the issues studied have been discussed in the literature and eight are included in the AAMFT'sEthical Principles for Family Therapists(1984). In addition to showing how clinical members responded to dilemmic vignettes that reflect these dilemmas, results indicated that family therapists are facing these dilemmas, have a high rate of consensus of what they would and would not do in each situation and almost all the situations were seen as being ethically significant by the majority of respondents.

Compliments are often viewed primarily as a linear event in which one person expresses approval or admiration of another. Far less attention has been given to the circular nature of compliments and the manner in which they enhance the positions of both the giver and the receiver of the compliment. Therapeutic compliments have proven to be highly effective means of motivating clients, while at the same time increasing therapeutic leverage. This article proposes that compliments should be purposefully given, and that the type of compliment should vary with the stage of therapy and the intended response of the client to the compliment.
