Minuchin, Rosman and Baker's (1978)Psychosomatic Familiesis widely cited as a demonstration that the physiological disturbance of some diabetic patients serves a function in their families. We found that the original data did not provide such a demonstration. We examined the psychosomatic family model in light of recent developments in the study and treatment of diabetes. We concluded that the model decontextualizes the family and assigns to it characteristics that are more appropriately seen as reflections of the disease process, the family coping tasks this entails, and the nature of the family's relationship with the health care system. Statistical analyses of the original data are reported which strongly support the original conclusions; Coyne and Anderson's (1988) presentation of the methodology and findings of the original study is shown to substantially misrepresent information actually presented in the book. Review of the literature they cite was informative about some aspects of poorly controlled diabetes for a variety of populations but not relevant for psychosomatic patients; however, some of it supported our findings. Although there are a growing number of outcome research studies in marital therapy, there is a complete absence of research on change processes, and how such processes relate to outcome. This study attempts to analyze the process of change in the “best” sessions of Emotionally Focused Marital Therapy (EFT) (Greenberg&Johnson, 1986). Client performance in therapy was rated on depth of experiencing and the quality of interpersonal interactions. The occurrence of particular change events arising from the theoretical principles of EFT was also noted. This research was based on the assumption that much could be learned from families that had adapted well to the birth of a child with developmental disabilities. It was of interest to explore what made these families strong and if consistent patterns of coping and adjustment could be observed. Positive adaptation seemed unrelated to degree of the child's disability or level of soothability, and further, did not seem directly linked to family income level. However, it appeared that two‐parent families with few children were at a distinct advantage.
