摘要:
Hope and despair are antonyms that describe a person's emotional state, determine whether one receives a psychiatric label, and whether one experiences others as potentially loving or threatening. Patients come to the therapist, bereft of a sense of self‐esteem and personal potency, seeking the gift of hope which the therapist, who treasures life, is uniquely qualified to give. The cultivation of hope and the abolition of despair are prime ingredients in psychotherapy, yet have received little attention in the therapeutic literature. This article examines the nature and origin of hope and despai

摘要:
Paradox is inherently an epistemological phenomenon. The “existence” of parodox requires the premises and beliefs of an observer. There are no phenomena which are paradoxical in themselves—apart from an observer. The major premise that generates “paradox” is the (false) assumption that we live in an Aristotelian universe. This premise requires that self‐recursive phenomena be considered to be somehow unreal or illusory. Such epistemological (and ontological) disqualification of self‐recursive phenomena leads to a variety of consequences, perhaps the least of which is “paradox.” This paper argues that recursive ness is a fundamental phenomenon which, when ignored or denied, leads to destructiveness in our interac

This paper presents ten questions for understanding family functioning as a format for teaching one important aspect of family therapy. These self‐asked questions are then illustrated with a large, overly‐close fam

摘要:
The importance of considering a continuum of Emotionality (E) separately from Rationality (R) or Activity (A) is emphasized. A model showing equally all three aspects is presented that allows a clearer classification of family therapy theorists than has been possible heretofore. Diagnostic, therapeutic, and research implications are hinted at, but will be part of future work.

摘要:
The authors define characteristics of a corporate family style of functioning. An emphasis is placed on the need for sensitivity to the value structure of the family. Crisis is seen coming from a disruption in the support system of one or more members of the family. A treatment strategy with a case illustration is introduced based on strengthening the family using natural coping mechanisms in the community. The objective of treatment is to reinforce the family without necessarily challenging their values or style of functioning.

摘要:
Distressed couples were assigned to Behavioral Marital Therapy, Communication Therapy, or a Wait‐List. Treated couples demonstrated more change than controls in marital problems and general communication patterns, but not in feelings toward spouse or communication during conflict resolution discussions. Wives in treatment reported more positive change in personal, nonmarital problems than control wives. There were no overall differences between treatment groups; treated couples reported increases in marital satisfaction and communication from pretreatment to the 4‐month follow‐up. There was an interaction between age and response to treatment: young couples changed more in Behavioral Marital Therapy, while older couples responded better to Communication Therapy. Results are discussed in terms of the need for developing client‐tailored treatment p

摘要:
When a woman is the identified addict or a member of a drug/alcohol abusing family system she often experiences considerably more psychiatric abuse than her male cohorts. This paper surveys some of the representative literature reflecting attitudes and practices imposed on these women. Explanations based on a study of healthy family systems are given with interpretations anchored in cultural rather than sexist phenomena. It is suggested that women need to be understood according to the complex interlocking transactions within family systems.

摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of assessing the impact of infertility on couples/individuals and understanding the relevance of the impact in the context of psychological treatment. The assumption is that infertility can have a significant negative impact which can at least be minimized by therapeutic intervention. Three psychological‐behavioral categories are posited as the result of several years work with infertile individuals/couples. Detailed case presentations of couples in each category are given so that the total impact of the crisis of infertility and the role of psychological intervention can best be understoo

摘要:
This paper reviews the literature on reciprocity counseling. Evidence is presented for the usefulness of reciprocity counseling with young, well educated, white clients with slight to moderate marital distress. Research into the effectiveness of several components of reciprocity counseling including contracting, problem solving training and feedback is reviewed. Findings suggest that contracting alone is an important positive influence in increasing couples' reciprocating reinforcement. The impact of problem solving training is unclear. Sex of the therapist may influence husband and wife outcomes in problem solving training differentially. Couples' performance of problem‐solving behavior appears to be under the control of other as yet unspecified variables. Feedback as a single treatment has unpredictable and sometimes negative results. Therefore use of feedback alone or without careful supervision appears questionable at this time. Issues raised for further research include use of token economies for more severely distressed couples, use of multiple therapists, and the development of a classification scheme for the severity of marital distres

摘要:
The Delphi technique of refining group opinion was used to develop a graduate level marriage and family therapy curriculum. Opinions were synthesized from a national panel of 20 AAMFT Approved Supervisors and 25 training directors of graduate‐level marriage and family therapy programs. Three rounds of questionnaires were employed and 101 content areas met the criteria for inclusion into the final curriculum. Discussed are the similarities and differences of this curriculum and the current “model” AAMFT curriculum. It is hoped that the curriculum devised from this study will lead to the continued rethinking, refinement, and evolution of marriage and family therapy educ
