A summary of my viewpoint in family therapy is given which supplies basic principles of what I believe is a comprehensive theory and technique. Critics are saying today, with some justification, that family therapy is a hodgepodge of part‐theories and part‐techniques; that it is more an art form than clinical science. Treating relationships has become the hallmark of increasing numbers of therapists in the last decade. The interest in the field of marriage and and family counseling is also reflected by the mushrooming number of theoretical and empirical publications. This paper reviews some of the conceptual and programmatic trends that are occurring and also highlights several of the trends in evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment.

This paper describes some of the special problems confronting the female therapist doing couple therapy. They are grouped into four main categories, identified by a specific characteristic of the couple: the passive male, the aggressive male, the submissive female, and the dominant, aggressive female. The dynamics of each problem are delineated and suggestions for dealing with them, in marital as well as sex therapy, are presented. Additional observations are made on the values of using appropriate role modeling, and of forming and shifting supportive alliances, as therapeutic techniques.

Typical treatment modalities for alcoholics are geared to the individual even though the majority of alcoholics are married. The benefits of working with the couple, especially in group therapy, are pointed out. Lawyers and marriage and family counselors deal with people who have personal, legal, and emotional problems. As a matter of practice and procedure, lawyers refer individuals and couples to counselors, and counselors likewise refer to attorneys. Often this referrel comes too late to produce the desired results. This article indicates the areas where lawyers and counselors may function as an interdisciplinary team, making appropriate referrals at the proper time and in the proper manner.

Evidence that sex role stereotyping (SRS) reflects a strong negative valuation of women and is a factor in clinical evaluation raises the question of its affects upon evaluation and treatment in marriage counseling. The counseling literature was reviewed and although data on SRS was found, it seldom was related specifically to marriage counseling. The purpose of this paper is to consider the implications of SRS for marriage counselors in the light of current research findings on this issue. Suggestions for assisting counselors to deal with SRS in themselves and as professionals in the field of marriage counseling are presented.

A review of the literature on dimensions of family assessment is presented. Assessment strategies are grouped into four types: single concept notions, theoretical notions, broadly based clinical lists, and empirically derived approaches; and each is critically reviewed. A summary of major assessment dimensions and an ordering of these dimensions using cultural and developmental principles as contextual assessment categories is presented.

A behavioral approach to marital therapy in groups includes training in communication skills; increasing the recognition, initiation, and acknowledgement of pleasing interactions; redistributing time spent in recreational and social activities; and contingency contracting. These treatment modules are offered during eight to 10 sessions spaced over a three month period. The specific techniques are imbedded in a matrix consisting of an alliance between the spouses and the co‐therapists, and group cohesiveness. Evaluations of the approach with 40 couples indicate that the group methods produce statistically significant improvements in marital satisfaction. An experimental comparison revealed that the behavioral methods led to significantly greater improvements in the observed interactions between spouses than in a group which used a discussion‐interaction for
