摘要:
The concept of family homeostasis and related concepts such as family rules and family feedback mechanisms came under heavy fire in a recent article by Dell (1982). It is not easy to evaluate the arguments brought forth by Dell, since the concepts in question seem to have never been formally explicated. Most of this article is devoted to an attempt to develop such a formal explication. Dell's arguments are then examined one by one in the light of this explication, and most of them are shown to be mistaken. His main conclusion, that the concept of homeostasis should be replaced by a concept of coherence, is rejected.

摘要:
The thesis of “Beyond Homeostasis” is (a) that the discourse of family therapists unquestionably shows that family therapists have tended to see homeostasis as a trait of families; and (b) that such a view of homeostasis is inconsistent with the systemic paradigm. Therefore, family therapy should go beyond such an understanding of homeostasis. Ariel et al. may have failed to grasp this argument; they have certainly chosen to ignore it. Ariel et al. have provided a logical empiricist explication of the nonsystemic version of homeostasis which is portrayed in the discourse of family therapists. I still argue that family therapy should go beyond such an understanding of homeosta

摘要:
Our reading of the relevant literature, explication of the concepts of family homeostasis, family rules, etc., and critical analysis of Dell's arguments have been oriented by the same systemic, interactional and context‐sensitive paradigm as Dell's. We see the empirical data through the same epistemological spectacles as he does. Therefore, our critique is not only consistent and valid (as admitted by Dell) but also compatible with his world view. His arguments fail on logical and methodological, not epistemological, grounds. The freshly elaborated arguments included in his reply have failed to convince us that the concepts of homeostasis, family rules, family feedback mechanisms, etc., should be discarded. We did and do concede, however, that family theory should “go beyond homeostasis” by adding the concept of coherence to its repertoire, in order to explain second‐order change. The latter concepts should also be formally exp

摘要:
In the recent family therapy literature, therapists have been cautioned to use paradoxical looking techniques as either a last resort, or else not to use such actions at all with specific problems. The paper argues that these stances arise from a rigid adherence to a set of orthodox views from which these actions appear contradictory. Similar to family systems, when such orthodox therapy systems do not question or alter their own premises in the face of contradiction, they tend to attribute either badness or madness to the action and either try to exorcise the badness, or banish the action. The literature which either prescribes “paradox as a last resort,” or which proscribes it altogether is reviewed and critiqued. Walter Buckley's process/adaptive system model is recommended as a positive alternative view from which such previously pardoxical actions may often be elected as a logical and effective first cho

摘要:
Several strategic techniques are presented for unblocking marital therapy when an impasse has been reached. For each technique, the goals and applicability of the intervention are presented, as well as potential problems and modifications. All of these techniques employ the acceptance and amplification of the status quo. The techniques are not intended to be used in isolation and require careful and well‐planned applicatio

摘要:
Based on a mental health pilot project with 34 adoptive families, this paper examines the unique differences of adoptive families from other family systems. The paper defines the context of the adopted child's symptoms and the families' characteristics. The relationship between adoption and the family's structure and development are analyzed.

摘要:
A survey was undertaken to assess the prevalence of family therapy models utilized by a sample of members in the American Association for Marital and Family Therapy. Frequencies and rankings of widely recognized therapeutic frameworks are reported. Brief discussion centers on the highest ranking choice, the notion of eclecticism, and cautious interpretation of the data.

摘要:
This article discusses basic theoretical assumptions underlying the process of family therapy education as the authors conceive it. The application of these assumptions is illustrated by the description of various teaching strategies that may be used in a wide range of graduate family therapy courses.

摘要:
The development of a rapid, easy to use, behaviorally oriented communication assessment scale is traced. A series of studies designed to determine its validity, reliability, and usefulness as an outcome measure are summarized. The current and potential uses of the scale are outlined along with guidelines for its application.
