摘要:
Epistemological critiques of the theory and practice of family therapy recently have also been brought to bear on mainstream strategies and methods of research in family therapy. In this paper, it is argued that standard research methods are the only ethically responsible means presently available by which we can assess the efficacy of family therapy. It is also argued that standard research models have already provided data of practical relevance to clinicians, patients and public policy makers and should not be abandoned in haste. Finally, it is argued that there are insufficient grounds for divorce between the “new epistemology” and standard research, since commonplace research designs and methods are far more compatible with systemic thinking than some observers have sugges

摘要:
Empirical studies related to divorce therapy are reviewed both substantively and methodologically. There is strong evidence for the superiority of mediation to traditional adversary methods for custody and visitation disputes. Conciliation counseling appears to increase the number of reconciliations in the short‐term. Other conclusions must remain very tentative. Overall, the methodologies of the 22 studies are weak; however, there are wide variations in quality. Investigations of divorce mediation utilized the best designs and studies of separation techniques the worst. What we know and what we need to know about divorce therapy is answered critically and suggestions are made for future research and practic

摘要:
The mother's depression is considered as a special problem in the family therapy of single parent families. It is seen as resulting from unresolved mourning that is maintained by the family system. Several reasons why the single parent family's structure seems inherently vulnerable to unresolved mourning are offered. Some techniques of Structural Family Therapy are proposed in a specific order to facilitate mourning in such families. A successful mourning experience requires a restructuring of the family that provides energy for the remainder of the therapy.

摘要:
This paper utilizes the Transitionally Unintegrated‐Externally Open family system type derived from Wertheim (1973,1975) to address the multiple factors that may enhance or reduce the vulnerability of the adolescent marriage. Facilitating and constraining factors on the development of marital system autonomy and competence are identified at the individual, marital, familial and extra‐familial levels. Guidelines for clinical assessment and intervention are presen

摘要:
A brief introduction to Neuro‐Linguistic Programming™ (NLP™) as taught by the developers of NLP, Richard handler, John Grinder and their associates, is presented. This is followed by case examples. The cases illustrate what the authors believe are some of the substantive gains which NLP techniques have provided in their own and others' work with couples and families. NLP's major contributions involve understanding new models of human experience. This paper, however, is focused principally on a consideration of useful technology. The intent is to share from over three years' experiences certain fundamental and consistent benefits derived from the addition of NLP to clinical pra

Behavioral problems that frequently occur in pediatric cancer treatment settings, such as food refusal and the resistance to treatment, have been successfully treated utilizing family therapy techniques. The theoretical background that supports this mode of intervention and several case studies are presented.

摘要:
This paper describes the evaluation of a training program designed to impart family therapy skills to 24 social workers on the staff of a large metropolitan “family service” agency. While its impact somewhat surpassed initial expectations, the need for reliable instruments capable of measuring change in trainees' perceptual and executive skills, is noted. It begins with a brief description of the training prog

摘要:
This study examined the relationship between late adolescents' perception of their parents' marital coalition and academic success as a college freshman. The hypothesis was tested that late adolescents from families with a primary cross‐generational bond (e.g., mother‐son) have more difficulty emancipating from the family than offspring from families in which mother and father are the primary dyadic alliance in the family. Academic success as a college freshman was utilized as one measure of the late adolescents' success in separating from the family. The subjects were 36 18–year‐old freshman males placed on academic probation and 36 passing males matched on ethnicity and SAT scores. The principal results were that subjects reporting a primary marital alliance were more likely to succeed academically and were more internal on the Rotter I‐E scale than subjects who reported a nonmarital alliance as primary. The findings provide support for the theory of structural family relations, and clarify familial processes that affect late adolescent emancipation from t

摘要:
This study compared 17 assaultive adolescents and 12 nonassaultive adolescents on a measure of family structure which assesses the family's perceptions of the authority hierarchy and the amount of closeness and distance between family members. The results demonstrated that the experimental group significantly more often perceived the presence of a reversal in the generational hierarchy of authority. The authors discuss the meaning of these results as they relate to violent teenagers and their family interactions.
