Acidified boiling water (ABW) method, applied correctly on a twice‐ and once‐daily basis, were compared on 15 farms in England and Wales during the winter of 1975/76. Treatments were applied in alternate months on each farm for six months, and during the once‐daily treatment the second wash comprised a cold solution of sodium hypochlorite (250 mg/l available chlorine). Bacterio logical tests of both the milking equipment and the bulk milk showed no significant differences between the treatments. Continuous application of the once‐daily method during a further three‐month summer period on six farms showed mean bacterial colony counts to be higher in rinse samples but lower in milk samples compared with results previously obtained from the same farms for both treatments. The once‐daily ABW treatment as monitored on one farm reduced the electricity costs for water heating by 45 per cent, which represented a saving of £28 per annum per

The work described was undertaken to assess the suitability of raising the incubation temperature of the miniaturized Intertest and Oxoid (AIM) test from 37.5°C to 45°C and to investigate the use of Intertest Accuspheres as a material suitable for a miniaturized screening test. Fresh raw bulk antibiotic‐free volumes of milk were used, and to these were added appropriate volumes of a standard penicillin solution to give various concentrations of penicillin. Standard and miniaturized tests were carried out at 37.5°C and 45°C (Accuspheres tests were carried out at 45°C only). The results of tests carried out at 45°C show that, although complete agreement between the standard and miniaturized tests was not obtained, a definite blue colour, interpreted as a fail, always resulted when milk tested contained ≥0.02 IU/ml added penicillin. European Economic Community and United Kingdom regulations relating to the composition of liquid milk are reviewed, and sales of the various categories of drinking milk in Member States of the EEC and in the United States are discussed in relation to total sales. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of standardized liquid milk from the consumer, producer, processor, and UK national interest point of view are highlighted.
