ABSTRACTThe classification of the family Micropezidae is re‐examined and a key is given to the five subfamilies now recognised, of which Calycopteryginae is described as new and Eurybatinae is raised from tribal rank. Metopochetini is a new tribe of Eurybatinae. A key is given to the nine genera now included in the Eurybatinae, of whichPapezais described as new.P.szentivanyiis a new species from Papua. Notes on the taxonomy and distribution of genera are included. The position ofAnaeropsisBigot in the Micropezidae is confirmed. New synonymies are established as follows:CrepidochetusEnderlein (=GongylocephalaCzerny syn. n.);Metopochetus bivittatus(Macquart) (=Calobata tenuipesWalker syn. n.). New generic combinations are as follows:Metopochetus terminalis(Walker) andM.compressus(Walker) fromCalobata; Crepidochetus nigrifemur (Czerny), C.pallidus(Steyskal), andCater(Steyskal) fromGongylocephala; Crosa fragilis(Walker) fromMicropeza;Crosa nigriventris(Enderlein) andC.uneifera(de Meijere) fromEurybat

SYNOPSISAn account is given of samples of houseflies taken from various natural populations in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) to investigate the number of evolutionary forms of housefly that may occur on the island. The results are related to the formal taxonomy of the genusMusca.

ABSTRACTThe genusPodothripsHood is redefined, and three new species are described:orionandaustralisfrom Australia andmoundifrom New Guinea. Two new synonymies are recorded inPodothripsandfuscusMoulton andmonsteraeMoulton are excluded. A key to the nineteen species and an annotated catalogue are provided. The distribution and biology of the genus are briefly discussed.
