SummaryA description is given of the pathological changes present in 8 mares which died or were euthanased in the course of an outbreak of paralysis on a Thoroughbred studfarm. In all cases the principal changes were in the central nervous system (CNS) and consisted of a severe and widespread vasculitis in the brain, cord, sheaths of nerves, capsules of ganglia and occasionally elsewhere in the body. Associated with the damage to vessel walls there was haemorrhage and exudation of plasma into the perivascular tissues. Involvement of neurones was minimal and no neuronophagia was present. Six cases had malacic foci in the brain, related to thrombosis of local arteries. Acinar necrosis in the mammary gland was present in one case.Examinations of the CNS and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for the presence of equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV1) or other microbial agents proved negative but EHV1 was isolated from the spleen of one mare and from the pharyngeal mucous membrane in another.The pathogenesis of this type of paralysis is discussed.RésuméDonne une description des changements pathologiques constatés chez huit juments qui moururent ou furent détruites au cours d'une épidémie de paralysie dans un élevage de pur‐sang. Dans tous les cas, les principaux changements notés ont touché au système nerveux central (SNC); ils comprenaient une vascularite aigüe et étendue de la moëlle épinière, des gaines nerveuses, des capsules ganglionnaires et parfois dans d'autres parties du corps. Les dégâts constatés dans les parois vasculaires étaient accompagnés d'hémorragies et d'exsudation de plasma dans les tissus périvasculaires. Les neurones n'étaient pratiquement pas affectés et aucune neuronophagie n'a été constatée. Six cas présentaient des foyers malaciques dans la cervelle dus à des thromboses d'artères locales. Un cas présentait une nécrose acinaire de la glande mammaire.L'examen du SNC et du liquide céphalo‐rachidien (LCR) pour rechercher la présence du virus de l'herpès équin 1 (EHV 1) ou d'autres agents microbiens a été négatif, mais EHV 1 a été isolé de la rate d'une jument et de la muqueuse pharyngienne d'une autre bête. La pathogenèse de ce type de paralysie est discutée.ZusammenfassungEs werden die pathologischen Veränderungen bei acht Stuten beschrieben, die während eines Lähmeausbruchs in einem Zuchtstall für Rassepferde verendeten bzw. eingschläfert wurden. Die Veränderungen zeigten sich in allen Fällen hauptsächlich im zentralen Nervensystem (ZNS), und zwar in Form einer schweren, ausgedehnten Vaskulitis im Gehirnstrang, den Nervenscheiden, den Ganglienkapseln und gelegentlich auch in anderen Körperbereichen. In Verbindung mit der Gefäßbeschädigung treat eine Blutung und Plasmaexudation in das Perivaskulärgewebe auf. Die Neuronen waren nur minimal betroffen, und es wurde keine Neurophagie festgestellt. In sechs Fällen wären mit der Thrombose in den örtlichen Arterien in Zusammenhang stehende malazische Foci im Gehirn vorhanden. The paper describes the assessment and practical implications of a laryngeal adductory reflex in a series of 30 ataxic and 64 non‐ataxic horses. The reflex was evoked by slapping the saddle region just caudal to the withers. In normal horses this produced a flickering adductory movement of the contralateral arytenoid cartilage which was observed endoscopically. Abolition of the laryngeal response was encountered in 3 situations:—1Disruption of the afferent impulse occurred in those horses in which there was significant spinal cord pathology affecting the pathway from the cranial thoracic region to the medulla.2Disruption of the efferent impulse was manifest when damage to the adductory component of the recurrent laryngeal nerve prevented normal adduction.3The reflex was abolished in tense or frightened horses, possibly due to interference from higher centres.The laryngeal adductory reflex was considered to be a useful diagnostic and prognostic aid in the assessment of ataxia and spinal cord lesions in the horse.Cet article décrit les modalités d'observation et les conséquences pratiques d'un réflexe laryngé d'adduction chez 30 chevaux ataxiques et 64 chevaux non ataxiques. Le réflexe était déclanché en frappant du plat de la main, la région sous la selle immédiatement en arrière du garrot. Chez des chevaux normaux, il en résulte un mouvement d'adduction brutal du cartilage arytenoïde oppsé, tel qu'on l'observe par endoscopie. La suppression de ce réflexe fut observé dans 3 case:1°—Par non transmission des stimulus chez les animaux atteints d'une affection de la moelle épinière telle que les voies de transmission allant de la région thoracique antérieure à la moelle épinière, se trouvaient interrompues.2°—L'interruption de l'influx nerveux efférent était évidente lors de lésion du nerf récurrent laryngé empechant l'adduction normale.3°—Le réflexe était supprimé chez les chevaux tendus ou effrayés, en raison d'une éventuelle interférence des centres supérieurs.Le réflexe d'adduction laryngé est ici considére comme pouvant aider en diagnostic et au pronostic des ataxies et des lésions de la moelle épinière chez le cheval.Dieser Artikel beschreibt die Interpretation und die praktische Bedeutung des laryngealen Adduktorenreflexes bei 30 ataktischen und 64 nicht‐ataktischen Pferden. Der Reflex wurde ausgelöst durch einen Schlag auf die Sattellage knapp hinter dem Widerrist. Bei normalen Pferden bewirkte dieser Schlag eine flatternde, adduktorische Bewegung des contralateralen Arythaenoids, die endoskopisch zu sehen war. SummaryBlood samples were collected from 16 Thoroughbred horses before, during and after the second day of a 3‐day event. Plasma osmolality, concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, urea, creatinine, glucose, bilirubin, iron, total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, calcium, inorganic phosphate, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides and non‐esterified fatty acids were measured. Significant differences from pre‐event values were found in all parameters with the greatest changes being found after the cross‐country phase. Most parameters showed significant rises following exercise, except calcium and chloride, which decreased. It was deduced from the changes in biochemistry that dehydration, reduced glomerular filtration rate, increased glycogenolysis and increased lipid metabolism, were a result of this form of competitive exercise.RésuméLe sang de 16 Pur Sangs a été prélevé avant, durant et après le second jour d'un concours complet d'équitation. On y mesura les concentrations de sodium, potassium, chlorure, urée, créatine, glucose, bilirubine, fer, protéines totales, albumine, phosphatase alcaline, aspartate aminotransférase, alanine aminotransférase, créatine kinase, calcium, phosphate inorganique, acide urique, cholestérol, triglycérides, acides gras non esterifiés et l'osmolarité du plasma.Des variations significatives furent trouvées pour tous les paramètres, par comparaison avec les valeurs recueillies avant le début du concours complet, les changements les plus importants ayant été constatés après le cross country.Toutes les valuers augmentèrent après exercice, à l'exception de celles du calcium et du chlorure qui diminuèrent. Signifikante Unterschiede zu den Resultaten vor der Prüfung ergaben sich bei allen Parametern, mit den stärksten Abweichungen nach der Geländeprüfung. SummaryThe effects of prolonged exercise on plasma concentrations of corticosteroids, insulin, glucose, lactate and β‐hydroxybutyrate were studied in a group of horses competing in a 160 km endurance ride. Of the 53 horses included in the study at the outset, 23 completed the course.Plasma corticosteroids increased while glucose and insulin decreased during exercise. Little change occurred in plasma lactate or β‐hydroxybutyrate. The parameters studied did not result in the finding of any consistent significant differences between individuals that completed and those that did not complete the course.RésuméUn groupe de 53 chevaux fut soumis à une épreuve d'endurance longue de 160 km. 23 achevèrent le parcours. Sur tout le groupe, onétudia les efforts d'un exercice prolongé sur les concentrations plasmatiques, de corticostéroïdes, d'insuline, de glucose, de lactate et de B‐hydroxybutyrate.Durant l'exercice, les corticostéroïdes augmentèrent, le glucose et l'insuline diminuèrent, le lactate et le B‐hydroxybutyrate plasmatiques furent peu modifiés. SummaryDaily oral administration of 30 mg allyl trenbolone (Regumate) for 10 to 15 days to 61 barren, maiden and lactating Thoroughbred mares which were exhibiting either deep anoestrus, shallow anoestrus, prolonged spring oestrus or lactation anoestrus, resulted in 54 mares (88 per cent) showing oestrous behaviour within 8 days, and 51 mares (84 per cent) ovulating within 18 days, after the last dose of compound. Response rate was lowest in mares in deep anoestrus. Of the 38 Regumatetreated mares which were covered during the induced oestrus, 21 (55 per cent) conceived. The practical value of this form of progesterone withdrawal therapy as a method for hastening the onset of the breeding season in Thoroughbred mares is discussed.RésuméL'administration orale de 30 mg d'allyl trenbolone (Regumate), durant 10 à 15 jours, à 61 juments vides, soit en lactation, soit vierges, soit en anoestrus profond, soit en anoestrus léger, soit en anoestrus prolongé, soit en anoestrus de lactation, suscita chez 54 juments (88%), un comportement d'oestrus dans les 8 jours, et 51 juments (84%) ovulèrent dans les 18 jours succédant à la dernière administration du produit. Le taux de réponse fut plus bas chez les juments en anoestrus profond. Parmi les 38 juments traitées par ce produit qui furent saillies sur la chaleur provoquée, 21 (55%) furent gestantes. SummaryThe prevalence of antibodies toToxoplasma gondiiwas investigated among equids in 3 localities of north India, using the direct haemagglutination test. Of the 603 animals sampled, titres ranging from 1:8 to 1:512 were found in 71 (11.8 per cent). Specific titres of 1:64 or more were found in 34 (5.6 per cent) sera. The number of positive titres at Babugarh (Uttar Pradesh) was considerably higher than at 2 other localities. Although the likelihood of positive sera appeared to increase with age, the animal's sex appeared to have little influence. Subjects with reproductive disorders or eye ailments did not have a high prevalence of positive titres compared with normal subjects.RésuméEn employant l'épreuve d'hémagglutination indirecte, on a étudié la présence des anticorps anti Toxoplasma gondii, chez les équidés de trois localités du nord de l'Inde.Dans une population de 603 animaux, 71 montrèrent des titres variant de 1/8 à 1/512 (11,8% du total). Des titres considérés comme spécifiques, égaux ou supérieurs à 1/64 furent trouvés dans 34 sérums (5,6%). Le nombre des titres positifs constatés à Babugarh (Uttar Pradesh), était beaucoup plus élevé que dans les deux autres localités. La probabilité d'une sérologie positive parut croître avec l'âge et ne pas dépendre du sexe.
