SUMMARYA new method of skin grafting in horses referred to as the fenestrated graft technique is reported. It proved to be a practical method of covering the larger skin defects encountered in this species. The holes in the graft prevent the accumulation of serum or blood beneath it. Since the residual “raw patches” left by the fenestrations are small, the time necessary for the complete epithelialization of the defect is reduced.The topical use of Solcoseryl in the preparation of the skin graft, and in its subsequent post‐operative treatment, proved effective in clinical cases, and is worthy of further application and objective investigation.RÉSUMÉOn annonce une nouvelle méthode de la transplantation de la peau chez le cheval, une transplantation de peau “perforée”.Cette méthode pour couvrir des plaies importantes s'est révélée positive.Les trous dans la peau transplantée sont préventifs contre une accumulation de serum et de sang sous la peau. Le temps pour une épithelisation totale d'une intervention est réduit, car les parties crues restantes de ces ouvertures sont très petites.L'usage local de Solcoseryl lors de la préparation d'une transplantation ainsi que dans le traitement postopératif est reconnu dans les cas cliniques comme efficace et devrait à l'avenir être appliqué et examiné.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGEs wird über eine neue Methode der Hauttransplantation beim Pferd, die sogenannte fenestrierte Lappentechnik, berichtet. SUMMARYThe clinical and pathological features of the first case in Britain of equine neuritis of the cauda equina are presented. These features were typical of the disease as reported in the literature, although cranial and spinal nerves were apparently not involved.Previous reports and comparisons with other similar human and animal disease are discussed. A hypothesis of initial local infection followed by a hypersensitivity reaction affecting nerve roots is postulated to explain the pathogenesis of this syndrome.RÉSUMÉLes caractères cliniques et pathologiques du premier cas de névrite de la queue de cheval rencontré en Grande Bretagne sont présentés. Ces signes typiques de la maladie, correspondent à ceux rapportés dans la littérature, bien que les nerfs craniens et rachidiens ne soient pas impliqués.Des communications antérieures et des comparaisons avec d'autres affections semblables sont étudiées. SUMMARYSome of the principal causes of stillbirth and foalhood mortality in the Thoroughbred are described, based on the interim findings of a Survey of perinatal disease and mortality, and on autopsy records.A high proportion of the early foalhood mortality can be attributed to defective intrauterine development in various forms. Twinning also is an important cause of perinatal mortality. Among diseases affecting foals during the first few weeks of life, alimentary disorders and generalized infections were the most important categories.Some of the factors influencing foetal development and maturity are discussed, and the need for more research into this subject in the equine is commented upon.RÉSUMÉQuelques unes des causes principales de la mortalité néo natale et durant les premières semaines, chez le foal de Pur Sang, sont indiquées, compte tenu d'une étude des maladies péri‐natales et des examens post mortem effectués.Une forte proportion des cas mortels durant le très jeune age peut être attributée à diverses formes de pertubations durant la vie intra utérine. La gemellité est également une cause importante de mortalité. SUMMARYOf 140 horses passing through the hospital of Liverpool University Veterinary School, eight (5.7 per cent) were found to give positive results in serological tests for Brucella abortus infection. The widely divergent clinical signs exhibited by these horses are discussed in relation to their blood test results; in only a minority of cases are the signs readily attributable to the disease.RÉSUMÉDe 140 chevaux qui sont passes par l'hôpital de la Faculté des Sciences Vétérinaires de l'Universite de Liverpool, on a trouvé huit (5.7%) qui donnaient des résultats positifs aux épreuves sérologiques pour l'infection Brucella Abortus. On discute les indices clinicaux bien divers que présentaient ces chevaux, par rapport aux résultats des examens du sang. SUMMARYA stallion was examined because of a pronounced scrotal swelling of three weeks' duration. A sudden loss of fertility with the finding of increased numbers of abnormal sperm indicated degeneration of the seminiferous epithelium. Based on the results of the physical examination and analysis of fluid aspirated from a fluctuant portion of the swelling, a tentative diagnosis of haematocoele was made. Unilateral castration was performed.Periodic examination of the stallion's semen for eight months after surgery indicated recovery of normal spermatogenesis in the remaining testis. The fertility of the stallion returned to normal in the subsequent breeding season.RÉSUMÉUn étalon fut examiné pour oedème important du scrotum datant de trois semaines. Une perte soudaine de la fertilité avec accroissement du nombre des spermatozoides anormaux indiquait une dégénérescence de l'épithelium des tubes séminifères. Un diagnostic présomptif d'hématocèle fut fait. Une castration unilatérale fut opérée.Le controle périodique du sperme de cet étalon durant les huit mois suivant l'opération montra la récuperation d'une semence normale et la fertilité de l'étalon fut normale l'année suivante.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGWegen einer 3‐Wochen bestehenden, ausgeprägten Skrotalschwellung wurde ein Hengst untersucht. Ein plötzlicher Fertilitätsverlust zusammen mit einem vermehrten Auftreten abnormer Spermien liess eine Degeneration des samenbildenden Epithels vermuten. Auf‐grund der klinischen Untersuchung und der Analyse eines aspirierten Punktats aus einer fluktuierenden Stelle der Schwellung wurde die Verdachtsdiagnose “Haematocele” gestellt und eine unilaterale Kastration vorgenommen. SUMMARYTracheal pressures and haematological values for pH, PCV, PCO2, and PO2, were determined in four healthy, trained horses before and immediately after strenuous exercise. Three trials with a cold weather mask, and two trials without a mask were conducted on each horse during periods of ambient temperatures between —23 and —2°C.Values after exercise were not significantly different with the mask on or off. Evidence of restriction of air flow did not occur with the mask on.After exercise mean values for arterial PCV and PO2increased and for arterial pH and PCO2decreased.RÉSUMÉLes pressions trachéales et les valeurs hématologiques y compris le pH, l'hématocrite, la pression de CO2, la pression d'O2, furent mesurées chez quatre chevaux bien portants avant puis immédiatement après un exercice sévère.Sur chaque cheval trois épreuves avec un bonnet ou camail et deux épreuves sans cet équipement furent effectuées à des températures ambiantes comprises entre —23 C et —2 C.Les valeurs après effort ne furent point différentes de manière significative sans ou avec bonnet. Il n'y eut aucune preuve d'une réduction de l'absorption d'air lorsque le bonnet était porté.Après exercice les valeurs moyennes de l'hématocrite artériel et de la pression O2s'accrurent, le pH et la pression CO2artériels décrurent.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDer Trachealdruck und die Werte des Blut pH, Haematokrit, PCO2und PO2wurden bei vier gesunden, trainierten Pferden vor und sofort nach strenger Arbeit bestimmt. Drei Versuche mit Kaltwettermasken und zwei Versuche ohne Maske wurden bei jedem Pferd unternommen bei Aussentemperaturen zwischen —23 und —2°C.Die Werte nach Arbeit erwiesen sich als nicht gesichert abhängig von der Maske. SUMMARYBlood samples from over 1,000 Thoroughbred horses of various ages and without evidence of red cell abnormality, have been examined using modern quality controlled methods; red cell values which are believed to be more accurate than those previously available are presented.
