SUMMARYThirty‐eight non‐pregnant, non‐cycling Thoroughbred mares in which peripheral plasma progestagen levels indicated persistent luteal function, were treated with a potent synthetic analogue of Prostaglandin F2α (ICI‐79939). Thirty‐four mares returned to oestrus within three days and subsequently ovulated. The four mares which failed to respond showed high serum gonado‐trophin (PMSG) levels. The study demonstrated that the majority of non‐pregnant mares which are not showing regular oestrous cycles during the breeding season are in prolonged dioestrus rather than anoestrus.RÉSUMÉ38 juments de Pur Sang, vides et ne presentant point de cycle oestral, chez lesquelles le taux de progestagone dans le sang périphérique indiquait une persistance de la fonction luteale, ont été traitées avec un produit de synthèse analogue à la prostaglandine F 2 alpha (ICI‐79939).34 juments montrèrent des signes d'oestrus dans les trois jours avec ovulation. SUMMARYThe various forms of tendon damage are reviewed and characterized. Importance is placed upon differential diagnosis as it determines the therapeutic regimen to be employed in any given case. SUMMARYVariations in the position and gross structure of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve were discovered in five out of a total of 33 thoracic dissections of the structure. In one of the five an accompanying cardiac nerve was also anomalous. Neuropathological changes were associated with the gross variations although there was no evidence of a decrease in the motor function of any of the affected nerves.RÉSUMÉDes variations dans la position et dans la structure anatomique du nerf laryngé recurrent gauche ont été constatées dans cinq des trente trois cas étudiés.Dans un cas un nerf cardiaque voisin était également anormal.Des variations neuropathologiques correspondaient à ces diversités anatomiques bien qu'on ne puisse en déduire une altération de la fonction motrice des nerfs interessés.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGVariationen in Lage und Grob‐Struktur des linken Recurrens wurden in 5 von 33 thorakalen Sektionen gefunden. SUMMARYNormal and diseased superficial digital flexor tendons of 104 Thoroughbred race horses have been studied by gross and microscopic examination. The vascularization was studied by means of microangiography. Infra‐red thermography was attempted as a method for early detection of acute tendon lesions. The functional blood flow of normal and diseased tendons was studied by means of the elimination curve of133Xe after intra‐tendinous injection of the isotope. Finally, a correlation was made in nine horses with tendon lesions examined by infra‐red thermography,133Xe‐elimination, micro‐angiography, and histology.It was concluded that degenerative intratendinous changes preceded clinical signs of tendon lesions. Multiple minute fibrillary ruptures initiate a reparatory inflammatory process in the tendon. Slight tendon lesions may heal with rest and adjusted training. The prognosis of complete restitution after severe lesions is poor.RÉSUMÉLes tendons flechisseurs superficiels normaux ou malades de 104 chevaux der Pur Sang ont étéétudiés cliniquement et histologiquement.La Vascularisation fut étudiée par microangiographie. La thermographie infra rouge fut utilisée pour essayer de détecter précicement les lésions tendineuses aigues.L'irrigation des tendons normaux et malades fut étudiée en tracant la courbe d'élimination du133Xe après injection intra tendineuse de cet isotope.Une correlation fut établie pour neuf chevaux porteurs de lésions entre la vitesse d'élimination du133Xe, la microangiographie, et l'histologie.On peut en conclure que des changements dégénératifs au sein des tendons précèdérent les signes cliniques de tendinite.De légères lésions tendineuses peuvent cicratiser grace au repos et à un traitement adapté.Par contre le pronostic d'une restauration complète faisant suite à des lésions graves reste sombre.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGVon 104 Vollblutpferden wurden normale und erkrankte oberflächliche Beugesehnen makroskopisch und mikroskopisch untersucht. Die Vaskularisation wurde mittels der Mikroangiographie studiert. Es wurde versucht durch Infrarot‐Thermographie akute Sehnenschäden möglichst frühzeitig nachzuweisen. Das Funktionieren der Blutversorgung in gesunden und erkrankten Sehnen wurde mittels der Eliminationskurve von133Xe untersucht, nachdem das Isotop intratendinös injiziert worden war. Zu guter Letzt wurde versucht die Resultate der Infrarot‐Thermographie, der133Xe‐Elimination, Mikroangiographie und Histologie bei neun Pferden zu korrelieren. Die Befunde führten zum Schluss, dass degenerative, intratendinöse Veränderungen den klinischen Manifestationen von Sehnenschäden vorangehen. Multiple, feine Faserrisse führen zu einer reparatorischen Entzündung in der Sehne. Leichte Sehnenschäden können ausheilen unter Ruhestellung und angepasstem Training. Die Prognose für ein

SUMMARYFlumethasone suspension was injected on two successive occasions at seven day intervals into four intercarpal and three tibiotarsal joints of seven horses. The contralateral joint served as a control joint and was subjected to aspiration only. Clinically, the drug was well tolerated with no evidence of increased synovial fluid, local warmth or tenderness, or interference with normal range of joint motion. In three tibiotarsal joints there was reduced capsular distention.Analyses of synovial fluid samples from injected joints revealed a mild self‐limiting microcrystalline induced synovitis. Aspiration of control joints resulted in minor changes in synovial fluid properties.Synovial membrane specimens obtained by punch‐biopsy of injected joints of five of the horses revealed histological evidence of minor degenerative changes. Pathological changes were not present in specimens from control joints.RÉSUMÉUne suspension de Flumethasone fut injectée par deux fois à un intervalle de 7 jours dans 3 articulations tibio tarsiennes et dans 4 articulations carpiennes chez 7 chevaux.L'articulation symétrique servait de contrôle et ne subissait dans le même temps qu'une aspiration de liquide synovial.Cliniquement la préparation fut bien tolérée sans évidence d'un accroissement subsequent de liquide synovial, sans hyperthermie et sans modification de la fonction articulaire.Des analyses du liquide intra synovial au niveau des articulations traitées montrèrent une légère synovite micro cristalline. Tandis qu'au niveau des articulations de contrôle les propriétés du liquide synovial n'étaient que très peu modifiées.Des biopsies des capsules articulaires sur cinq chevaux témoignèrent d'une légère altération dégénérative. Ces altérations n'existaient pas sur les membranes des articulations de contrôle.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGFlumethason‐Suspension wurde in 7‐tägigen Intervallen je zwei Mal in vier intercarpale und 3 tibiotarsale Gelenke von sieben Pferden injiziert. Das gegenüberliegende Gelenk diente als Kontrolle und wurde nur einer Aspiration unterzogen. Klinisch wurde das Präparat gut ertragen ohne vermehrte Synovia, lokale Wärme, Empfindlichkeit oder Beeinträchtigung der Beweglichkeit. Bei drei tibiotarsalen Gelenken wurde eine verminderte Kapselausdehnung festgestellt. Die Analyse von Synovia aus injizierten Gelenken ergab eine leichte, selbstheilende Synovitis, die der mikrokristallinen Suspension zugeschrieben wurde. Die Aspiration in den Kontrollgelenken ergab geringere Veränderungen in der Synovia. SUMMARYThe oral glucose tolerance test in the horse provides an aid to the diagnosis of pancreatic and small intestinal dysfunction. A dose of ***1 g. glucose/Kg bodyweight is administered by stomach tube producing a peak glucose level after two hours, which returns to the resting level four hours later. Two horses with autopsy‐confirmed small intestinal disease showing symptoms of malabsorption gave a “flat” glucose tolerance curve.RÉSUMÉLe test de tolérance du glucose par voie orale peut contribuer au diagnostic des troubles du pancreas et de l'intestin grêle. Une dose de 1 gr de glucose par kilo de poids vif est administrée à la sonde; on obtient une élevation maximale du glucose plasmatique après deux heures, et retour à la normale après quatre heures.Deux chevaux dont l'examen nécropsique confirma l'existence d'une maladie de l'intestin grêle avec malabsorption montrèrent une élevation modérée de la glycèmie.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDer orale Glucose‐Toleranztest ist beim Pferd ein Hilfsmittel zur Diagnose von Funktionsstörungen im Pankreas und Dünndarm.
