SUMMARYGeneral factors known to affect wound healing are reviewed. Those most likely to be important in the horse are general nutritional levels and the effects of temperature especially on wounds of the lower parts of the limbs.Some recent developments in the treatment of nonhealing wounds are mentioned. These include the application of “tissue adhesives” based on cyanoacrylate for use in superficial wounds where there has been extensive tissue loss and where epithelialisation is likely to be slow.The value of local application of oxygen to the surface of non‐healing wounds and skin grafts, to encourage rapid epithelial growth is emphasised.The possible role of anti‐collagen antibodies in the delayed healing of burns is mentioned and arising from this a suggestion is made as to a possible rational explanation for the periodic success of the practice of “firing” in the treatment of chronic sprains and bone proliferations.RÉSUMÉLes principaux facteurs pour influencer la cicatrisation des plaies sont passés en revue.Parmi eux, ceux qui paraissent être plus spécialement importants chez le cheval sont les facteurs nutritionels et ceux en relation avec la température, notamment lorsqu'il s'agit de plaies des extrémités inférieures des membres.Quelques acquisitions récentes dans le traitement des plaies à cicatrisation lente sont indiquées. En particulier, sont mentionnés les pansements adhésifs tissulaires à base de cyanoacrylates pour l'emploi sur les plaies superficielles, lorsqu'il y a eu perte importante de substance de telle manière que l'épitheliumisation est lente.L'utilitee des applications d'oxygène sur la surface des plaies à mauvaise cicatrisation et la valeur des greffes de peau pour accélerer l'épitheliumisation sont soulignées.Le rôle éventuel joué par les substances anticollagènes dans les retards de cicatrisation des brulures est évoqué: à partir de quoi, une hypothèse d'apparence rationnelle pour interprèter l'action souvent heureuse des feux dans le traitement des claquages et des exostoses est formulée.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie allgemeinen Faktoren, die die Wundheilung beeinflussen, werden zusammenfassend besprochen. Diejenígen, die beim Pferd am ehesten eine Rolle spielen, sind die Ernährungsbedingungen und die Temperatur, besonders bei Wunden an den tieferen Gliedmassenteilen. Einige neuere Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der Behandlung nicht‐heilender Wunden werden erwähnt, einschliesslich der Verwendung von “Gewebsklebstoffen” auf der Basis von Cyanacrylat bei oberflächlichen Wunden mit erheblichem Substanzverlust und wahrscheinlich langsamer Epithelisierung. Der Wert einer lokalen Applikation von Sauerstoff auf die Oberfläche nichtheilender Wunden und von Hauttransplantaten, um eine rasche Epithelisierung zu erreichen, wird hervorgehoben. SUMMARYSome of the relevant literature dealing with normal equine tendon morphology, vascularity, ultra‐structure and biomechanics, and the aetiology, pathology and treatment of tendon stress injuries is reviewed. SUMMARYThe paper describes a case of dissecting aortic aneurysm which had ruptured into the left pulmonary artery. The horse presented with atrial fibrillation and peripheral oedema. SUMMARYClinical and biochemical observations on eleven cases of post‐anaesthetic forelimb lameness were compared with similar studies on horses anaesthetised in lateral recumbency making an uneventful recovery. SUMMARYAn abnormal pattern of fibre type distribution has been observed in the left dorsal cricoarytenoid of a foetal horse. The gross atrophy of the left dorsal cricoarytenoid of a case of equine laryngeal paralysis occurred due to a decrease in mean transverse sectional area of its fibres, in particular a hypotrophy of the myosin ATPase high reacting fibres, rather than a decrease in fibre number.RÉSUMÉUne disposition anormale dans la distribution des fibres a été observée dans le muscle crico arytenoide dorsal gauche d'un foetus equin.Dans un cas de paralysie laryngée du cheval l'altération la plus importante constatée au niveau du muscle crico arytenoide dorsal gauche fut la réduction de la surface moyenne de section des fibres et en particulier une hypotrophy des fibres à myosine ATPase “high activity”, beaucoup plus qu'une réduction dans le nombre des fibres.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGEin abnormer Aufbau der Faserverteilung konnte im linken, dorsalen Cricoarythaenoid eines Pferdefoeten beobachtet werden. SUMMARYBased on the observation that with progression through the exercised, rested and sedated states the equine venous haematocrit and plasma protein content decrease while the erythrocyte sedimentation rate increases, a hypothesis is presented on some aspects of equine haemodynamics. SUMMARYConcentrations of testosterone in the peripheral plasma of normal, cryptorchid and castrated male horses have been measured by a rapid radioimmuno‐assay. Basal concentrations in horses with one or two testicles range from 65 pg to 1600 pg/ml. Intravenous injection of 12000 i.u. of Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) into horses possessing testicular tissue stimulated a rise in testosterone concentration which could be detected within 25–35 minutes of the injection.Geldings consistently showed low testosterone concentrations in the plasma (15.3±4.9 pg/ml; 15 animals), and injection of HCG did not stimulate a significant rise in testosterone concentration.Of 29 horses presented as rigs all those which were later found to have been already castrated had plasma testosterone concentrations indistinguishable from those found in geldings (nine animals) and failed to respond to HCG injection (five animals).Evidence is presented that the epididymis and spermatic cord of the horse are not capable of producing significant quantities of testosterone.The possibility is discussed of using paired blood samples, one taken prior to and the other taken after HCG injection, as a test of whether or not a horse has been castrated.RÉSUMÉLes concentrations de testosterone dans le plasma périphérique des chevaux males normaux, cryptorchides et castrés ont été mesurés par des tests radio actifs.La concentration de base chez les chevaux avec un ou deux testicules varie de 65 pg à 1600 pg/ml.L'injection intraveineuse de 12000 U.I. de gonadotrophine chorionique humaine chez des chevaux possédant un tissu testiculaire entraina.L'augmentation du taux de testostérone détectable entre 25 et 35 minutes après l'injection.Les chevaux hongres montrèrent de basses concentrations plasmatiques de testostérone (15.3±4.9 pg—15 sujets) et l'administration de gonadotrophine ne provoqua aucune élévation significative du taux de testostérone chez eux.Des 29 chevaux réputés cryptorchides tous ceux qui furent identifiés plus tard comme ayant été castrés montrèrent des concentrations plasmatiques de testostérone de même ordre que les hongres, et ne présentérent aucune réponse à l'injection de gonadotrophine.Il semble que ni le lépididyme ni le cordon spermatique du cheval ne soient capables de secrèter des quantités significatives de testostérone.On envisage la possibilité, en comparant deux échantillons de sang, l'un prélevé avant, l'autre prélevé aprés l'injection de gonadotrophine chorionique, d'établir si un cheval a été ou n'a pas été castré.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie Testosteronkonzentrationen im peripheren Plasma normaler, kryptorchider und kastrierter männlicher Pferde wurden gemessen mit Hilfe eines schnellen radio‐immuno‐assay. Die Konzentrationen schwanken zwischen 65 bis 1600 pg/ml bei Pferden mit einem oder zwei Hoden. Die intravenöse Injektion von 12'000 IU menschlichen Choriongonadotropins stimulierte einen Anstieg der Testosteronkonzentration bei Pferden mit Hodengewebe nach 25–35 Minuten.Wallachen zeigten immer tiefe Testosteronkonzentration im Plasma (15,3±4.9 pg/ml, N=15) und die Injektion von Choriongonadotropin führte nicht zu einem signifikanten Anstieg. Von 29 Pferden, die als Spitzhengste vorgestellt wurden, hatten alle diejenigen (9) tiefe Plasma‐Testosteronkonzentration, die sich als schon kastriert herausstellten und sie sprachen auch nicht auf Choriongonadotropin an (5). Es wird gezeigt, dass Epididymis und Samenstrang beim Pferd keine signifikanten Testosteronmengen produzieren. SUMMARYTwenty‐six mares were given dexamethasone intravenously and intramuscularly during the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Dosages varied, but tended to be confined to levels possibly used in clinical practice. Dexamethasone injections did not appear to alter the gestation length or induce parturition in the mares.RÉSUMÉVingt‐six juments ont reçu de la dexamethasone par voie intraveineuse et par voie intramusculaire durant le deuxième et durant le troisième trimestre de la gestation. Les dosages utilisés variaient dans des limites comparables à celles utilisées en therapeutique courante.
