SUMMARYCatheters were implanted through the left atrium into large veins drawing blood from regions of the diaphragmatic lobes in five ponies. Measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions in blood samples drawn through these catheters showed that in laterally recumbent conscious and anaesthetised animals the function of the lowermost lung is progressively impaired while in the supine position the function of both lungs is adversely affected.RÉSUMÉChez cinq poneys, des cathéters ont été introduits par l'oreillette gauche dans les grandes veines drainant le sang des lobes pulmonaires diaphragmatiques.La mesure des pressions d'oxygène et de CO2sur les échantillons de sang ainsi recueillis, montre que chez les poneys en décubitus latéral, qu'ils soient conscients ou anesthésiés, la fonction du poumon déclive est progressivement altérée. SUMMARYIn a retrospective study of selected cases, abdominal colic in 30 horses was attributed to enterolith obstructions of the large intestine. Obstructions caused by “true” enteroliths were confined to horses more than four years old. Prominent clinical features were recurrent mild abdominal pain, inappetance, gaseous distension and minimal intestinal motility. The various aspects of the clinical syndrome, including diagnostic problems and clinical management, are discussed.Most obstructing enteroliths were found near the beginning of the small colon and most horses contained only a single major concretion. Enteroliths were formed by mineral deposition in concentric layers about a central nidus of ingested material and were spherical or tetrahedral in shape. Intestinal concretions were found to consist primarily of ammonium magnesium phosphate.RÉSUMÉDans une étude rétrospective de cas sélectionnés, les coliques abdominales de trente chevaux ont été attribuées à l'existence d'obstructions par entérolithes. Les obstructions causées par des entérolithes proprement dits, ont été trouvées chez des chevaux âgés de plus de quatre ans. Les signes cliniques principaux ont été une douleur abdominale d'intensité moyenne et récidivante, de l'inappétence, une distension gazeuse et une motilité intestinale diminuée. Les aspects variés du syndrome clinique sont discutés, y compris les problèmes diagnostiques et cliniques. Les entérolithes les plus gênants ont été trouvés à l'entrée du petit colon et la plupart des chevaux n'avaient qu'une seule concrétion. Hervorstehende klinische Eigenschaften bestanden in milden Abdominalschmerzen, Inappetenz, Blähung und minimaler Darmmotilität. SUMMARYThree horses were diagnosed as having monarticular septic arthritis due toStaphylococcus aureuson the basis of culture of articular cartilage, synovial membrane and/or synovial fluid. The organisms were all well recognised human phage types and in two cases demonstrated β‐lactamase (penicillinase) activity.Details of case histories are presented and the bacteriological techniques and antibiotic management with cloxacillin, methicillin and penicillin discussed. Following treatment, sterile cultures of synovial fluid were achieved in all cases, but in two horses the infections resulted in degenerative articular changes. This necessitated arthrodesis of the fetlock joint in one case.RÉSUMÉTrois chevaux ont présenté une arthrite septique monoarticulaire provoquée par des staphylocoques dorés. Ceux‐ci isolés des cartilages articulaires, de la membrane synoviale ou du liquide synovial, furent identifiés à des type humains. D'eux d'entre eux montrèrent une activité enzymatique de type B lactamase (pénicillinase).Les cas cliniques sont étudiés; les techniques bactériologiques et le traitement antibiotique à l'aide de clox‐acilline, de méthicilline et de pénicilline sont discutés. Après le traitement des cultures stériles furent obtenues à partir du liquide synovial, dans tous les cas. Pour deux chevaux, l'infection provoqua une dégénérescence des cartilages articulaires. Pour l'un d'eux, une arthrodèse du boulet fut nécessaire.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGBei drei Pferden konnte in einem Gelenk eine septische Arthritis diagnostiziert werden, die auf Staphylococcus aureus zurückzuführen war (Kulturen aus Gelenksknorpel, Synovialis und/oder Synovia). Es handelt sich bei den Keimen um gut bekannte humane Phagen‐typen, die in zwei Fällen auch β‐Lactamase (Penicillinase)‐Aktivität aufwiesen.Einzelheiten der Krankengeschichten werden bekanntgegeben und die bakteriologischen Methoden sowie die antibiotische Therapie mit Cloxacillin, Methicillin und Penicillin diskutiert. Nach der Behandlung konnte in allen Fällen die Sterilität der Synovia festgestellt werden, aber bei zwei Pferden bewirkte die Infektion degenerative Gelenksveränderungen, die in einem Fall eine

SUMMARYA tentative diagnosis of a fistula between the tendon sheaths of the right extensor carpi radialis and the intercarpal joint was confirmed by positive contrast radiography following injection of sodium diatrizoate into the joint. Surgical removal of a tag of synovial membrane and repair of the fistula was carried out. Post surgical treatment included mild exercise to prevent adhesions within the sheath. A month following discharge, contrast radiography revealed no communication between joint and tendon sheath. At this time mild distension of the sheath was relieved by aspiration and it did not recur when the horse returned to work following a further month of rest.RÉSUMÉLe diagnostic présomptif d'une fistule reliant la gaine synoviale tendineuse de l'extérieur antérieur du métacarpe à la synoviale intra‐articulaire du carpe fut confirmé par radiographie. On utilisa comme agent de contraste, l'injection intra‐articulaire de diatrizoate de sodium. On procéda alors à l'ablation d'un fragment de membrane synoviale et à la réparation de la fistule.Le post opératoire comporta un exercice modéré afin de prévenir les adhérences à hauteur de la synoviale tendineuse. Une radiographie ultérieure révéla qu'il n'existait plus de communication entre l'articulation du carpe et la gaine tendineuse. A ce moment, une dilatation modérée de la gaine fut traitée par ponction et retrait du liquide en excés. Elle ne récidiva point quand le cheval fut remis au travail un mois plus tard.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie Verdachtsdiagnose einer Fistel zwischen der Sehnenscheide des rechten extensor carpi radialis und des intercarpalen Gelenks konnte durch Kontraströnt‐gendarstellung mit Natriumdiatrizoat bestätigt werden. Man entfernte einen Synovialis‐Lappen auf chirurgischem Weg und verschloss die Fistel. Die post operative Behandlung bestand in leichter Bewegung, um das Auftreten von Adhäsionen innerhalb der Sehnenscheide zu verhindern. Einen Monat nach der Entlassung konnte die Kontraströntgendarstellung keine Kommunikation zwischen Gelenk und Sehnenscheide mehr nachweisen. Zu dieser Zeit bestand noch eine leichte Ueberfüllung der Sehnenscheide, die durch Aspiration behandelt wurde. Es stellten sich keine Rückfälle ein, als das Pferd nach einem weiteren Monat

SUMMARYThis paper discusses the factors which affect the healing of wounds at the tissue and organ levels. It covers some of the problems which complicate the sequence of healing and considers the mechanisms involved in regeneration and repair of tissues. The factors associated with the stimulus and sequence of healing and their interactions are also reviewed.RÉSUMÉCet article examine les facteurs qui influencent la cicatrisation des plaies au niveau des tissus et des organes.
