SummaryThis paper discusses certain aspects of circulatory physiology, including foetal circulation and the role of the thorax, and gives parameters for total blood volume, cardiac output, stroke volume and the distribution of blood between the pulmonary and peripheral circulation within the horse. The reader is taken on a journey around the circulatory system, beginning in the left atrium, into which richly oxygenated blood runs from the pulmonary veins. From here the blood is squeezed via the mitral valve into the left ventricular pump, where it is forced under high pressure through the peripheral circulation, the arterioles and capillaries, to collect, deoxygenated and under much lower pressure, into the venules and veins. The pumping action of the muscles and the negative intrathoracic pressure help to draw the blood back up to the right atrium, itself exerting a suction effect on the great veins.

SummaryThis article reviews anti‐inflammatory and antihypersensitivity drugs under these 4 headings: Functional or physiological antagonists; Selective pharmacological inhibitors; Broad spectrum anti‐inflammatory drugs; Miscellaneous inhibitors. The compounds considered include sympathomimetic amines, anticholinergic drugs, antihistamine drugs, tryptamine antagonists and dopamine antagonists, glucocorticosteroids and non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs, disodium cromoglycate and diethylcarbamazine citrate. The relationship of the pharmacological actions of these compounds is considered in the context of clinical conditions. The potential for immunomodulatory pharmacology is discussed using levamisole as an example.RésuméCet article passe en revue les médicamants anti‐inflammatoires et antalgiques sous quatre rubriques: Les antagonistes fonctionnels ou physiologiques; Les inhibiteurs pharmacologiques sélectifs; Les médicaments anti‐inflammatoires à large spectre; Les inhibiteurs divers.
SummaryA method for performing bronchography in standing non‐anaesthetised horses was developed. Bronchography was performed by insufflating the previously intubated trachea with a mixture of 120 to 200 g of finely powdered barium sulphate mixed with 3 to 7 g of powdered methyl cellulose. The mixture was delivered from an ether vaporiser into which compressed air was blown. Premedication with atropine sulphate immediately before insufflation minimised broncho‐constriction. Satisfactory bronchograms with contrast visible down to the seventh and eighth bronchial divisions were obtained in 80 per cent of the 26 horses tested. Poor results were obtained if there were delays in taking exposures. Total clearance of the barium sulphate from the lung fields was extremely rapid, averaging 4 h. No significant clinical side effects were noted and histology of the lungs, in animals sacrificed sequentially over a period of 2 weeks, demonstrated a minimal cellular response. In one clinical case, with chronic bronchitis, loss of parallelism of the bronchial walls and moderate bronchial dilatation between branches was demonstrated. It was concluded that although the value of bronchography as a diagnostic procedure in equine radiology has yet to be proven, the method of powder insufflation with barium sulphate provides a safe and accurate means of investigating bronchial conditions in the horse.RésuméOn a mis au point une méthode nouvelle de bronchographie chez le cheval debout et sans anesthésie.
