abstract–In a double‐blind study conducted on 53 wearers of complete dentures, application of 2 % chlorhexidine gluconate to the fitting surface of the maxillary denture for 2 weeks was found to produce a significant amelioration of inflamed tissues beneath the denture. Mycelium was eliminated in 90 % of the patients, as evaluated by palatal smears. Five weeks after the treatment was terminated the candida infection of the palatal mucosa was re‐established in all but one of the patients, probably because disinfection of the maxillary denture did not effect a complete suppression of candida growth, neither in the palate nor in other sites of the oral cavity. It is concluded that chlorhexidine gluconate is an appropriate alternative to specific antimycotic drugs for the treatment of palatal can didiasis. However, until conclusive evidence has been produced that prolonged mouth‐rinsing with chlorhexidine is biologically acceptable, it should be used primarily as a denture disinfectant, whereas specific antimycotic drugs should be used to eradicate candida residing on the oral

abstract–The aim of the present study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the adsorption of chlorhexidine to hydroxyapatite and teeth beyond the level observed for untreated material. For this purpose treatment of samples with 0.01 M glycerophosphate or phytic acid prior to the chlorhexidine adsorption was instituted. abstract–Groups of white albino rats were used in this study. Serial sections were prepared of the hard and soft palate, tongue, cheek, gingiva, cornea and ear, and were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Mitotic counts in tongue epithelium of nine groups of rats which received various colchicine dosages (0 to 3 mg/kg body weight) and were sacrificed 3½ h later showed that 1 mg colchicine per kg body weight is the optimal dosage for studying the mitotic activity in rat oral epithelium. Mitotic counts in six other groups of rats sacrificed at different times (0 to 50 min) after the administration of colchicine indicated that the colchicine takes effect 25–30 min after the injection. The pattern of diurnal variation in mitotic activity was determined in the ear and various oral epithelia using eight groups of colchicinized rats. A fairly high correlation was found between the daily mitotic rates and the mitotic rates obtained during the maximum mitotic activity. There was a low correlation between the daily mitotic rates and turnover times indicating that calculations of turnover time may fail to express the mitotic activity of the epithelium. abstract–The possible importance of zinc to cell proliferation in endochondral growth sites in the white rat was studied using zinc‐deficient feeding and light microscopic autoradiography with tritiated thymidine. Eight experimental rats were given a zinc‐deficient dietad libitumand eight paired‐fed controls were given the same diet plus zinc supplement. After 3 weeks on the experimental diet, at which time the animals were 6 weeks old, they were injected with H3‐thymidine. Two rats from each group were killed after 1 h, and 1, 3 and 6 d. abstract–Validity of response to a postal questionnaire, answered by 216 persons, was studied by comparing data from the respondents on the occurrence of dentures and on the number of remaining teeth with data recorded by a clinical examination. Information, collected in a personal interview on gingival disease, was compared with clinical records. Reliability was studied by examining the agreement between data from the questionnaires and from the interviews concerning time interval since the last dental visit.The information on the occurrence of dentures proved to be highly valid, while the reported number of teeth were less likely to conform with the clinical records. A slight tendency towards overreporting of remaining teeth was found. Conceivably, the greatest proportion of overestimates was caused by confusion concerning the counting of fractured teeth and roots. Gingival disease was markedly underreported. At the clinical examination, all subjects with some teeth showed signs of gingival disease, but only every fourth person reported having experienced “gum disease”. abstract–The relationship between crowding of teeth and gingivitis in mouthbreathers and nosebreathers was studied in a groupof 6‐ to 12‐year‐old children. The material consisted of fifty‐five children with obstructed nosebreathing due to enlarged adenoids. Forty healthy children served as controls. Gingival conditions were registered in accordance with Löe&Silness. Crowding was assessed according to Lundström. abstract–The study was undertaken in order to examine the relationship between occlusal wear and periodontal health in thc maxillary and mandibular anterior, premolar and molar regions of the human dentition. The occurrence and degree of attrition was recorded for the 4,316 fully erupted teeth of 154 males aged 19–22 years. The mandibular central incisors and the canines of both jaws were found most often to show attrition. In general, occlusal wear was found to be associated with improved cleanliness, and thus, in most areas of the dentition, also with improved periodontal conditions. At the openings of the major salivary glands, however, more calculus was found on attrited than intact teeth, and consequently, no improvement of the periodontal status was found in mandibular anterior teeth and maxillary molars. As the degree of attrition was not influenced by the frequency of toothbrushing, it seems evident that the masticatory function which results in occlusal wear of the teeth, has an effect per se on periodontal hea

abstract–The purpose of the study was to determine the fluoride content of acrylic and composite resins and to study the release of fluoride from these materials in comparison to the release from silicates. The analytical results showed that one composite contained approximately the same amount of fluoride as is generally reported for silicates. The other resins contained none or only minimal amounts of fluoride. The release of fluoride was studied by measuring the uptake of fluoride by synthetic hydroxylapatite. Rectangular test specimens, 2 × 2 × 12 mm, made of the fluoride‐containing resin were shaken in a neutral (pH 6.8) and an acidic (pH 5.8) solution with the hydroxylapatite for 7 weeks. The apatite was analyzed for fluoride each week and the test specimens were then transferred to a fresh solution with new apatite. As a control, a composite without fluoride was studied in the same way. For comparison two silicate cements were also included in the study. The results show that, during the first week, the uptake of fluoride by the apatite was greater from the silicates than it was from the composite. After that period the uptake continued at a lower level and did not show any marked decrease during the observation period. abstract–The enzymatic hydrolysis of hemoglobin (Hb) and N‐α‐benzoyl‐DL‐arginine‐2‐naphthylamine (BANA) was observed both in sound‐ and in carious human dentin. The enzyme activity expressed per mg protein in the sample and per min was at least ten times higher in carious than in sound dentin, as was also the DNA content in the samples. The hydrolysis of Hb and BANA was high over a relatively wide pH range, the optimum pH being 5.5 with Hb, and 7.0 with BANA, as substrates. EDTA, cetylpyridinium chloride and Hg2+ions inhibited strongly the hydrolysis of BANA at pH 7.0 but only slightly at pH 10.4.
