Abstract —The surface features of incipient caries lesions around bonded orthodontic brackets were assessed longitudinally. In standardized periods after debonding and clean‐up, color slides were made and silicone impressions were taken of two maxillary incisors on each of six adolescent patients. These teeth were characterized by varying degrees, of macroscopically visible demineralized white areas around the bonded brackets. The color slides were studied in a dark room. The positive surface replicas were studied in SEM. At the time of debonding heavy accumulations of dental plaque were observed in all areas corresponding to the white, demineralized areas. During the experimental period there was a reduction in these plaque deposits. The appearance of the lesions changed from chalky‐white at the time of debonding to a more diffuse opacity, particularly in the peripheral parts of the lesion. Examination of the surface replicas in the SEM revealed a general tendency toward leveling of the surface of the lesion indicating a loss of porous tissue. At higher magnification the lesions showed signs of wear. Four teeth were presented to illustrate typical examples of the time‐related changes at the surface. The present study confirmed that removal of cariogenic challenge results in arrest of further dermineralization. Abstract —The effect of phenytoin and its major metabolite p‐HPPH on concanavalin A (ConA) induced DNA‐synthesis of human lymphocytes was studied in vitro. In lymphocyte cultures depleted of phagocytizing cells by iron treatment PHT and p‐HPPH, in pharmacologic concentrations, caused a depression of the mitogen response measured as uptake of3H‐thymidine. In contrast, the presence of phagocytizing mononuclear cells during ConA‐stimulation in the presence of PHT and p‐HPPH caused a potentiation of ConA induced DNA‐synthesis. These effects of phenytoin on immunocampetent cells may be of significance in the pathogenesis of the PHT‐induced gingival overgrowth, since earlier we have reported the presence of large infiltrates of lymphocytes, mainly T‐lymphocytes in gingival biopsies from clinically non‐inflamed PHT‐indu

Abstract —The present investigation was carried out in order to obtain better information about the growth requirements for small‐sized oral spirochetes containing two endoflagella from each cell‐end. Eight strains of such spirochetes were isolated from subgingival plaqueinpatients suffering from advanced marginal periodontitis. The strains were maintained under anaerobic conditions in a fluid basal BHI medium with 15% inactivated rabbit serum, 0.07% Noble Agar and 5 μg/ml cocarboxylase. Firstly, the effect of trace amounts of oxygen in the atmosphere and pH in the medium on growth of the spirochete strains were examined. Secondly, the effect of different sera incorporated in the medium was examined, and thirdly, the effect of important growth factors in serum was studied by adding different serum components to the fluid basal medium instead of rabbit serum. Growth was always determined after 4 days' incubation at 35°C, either by counting numbers of spirochete cells in a Petroff‐Hauser counting chamber or by measuring the turbidity of the culture spectrophotometrically at 600 nm. There was no difference in growth by using an atmosphere containing 1 % oxygen or an anaerobic atmosphere. It was found that serum (rabbit or human) was an essential growth component, and no single growth factor could replace rabbit serum. Only a long chain fatty acid mixture and an amino acid solution could, to a minor extent, stimulate growth compared to the basal medium without rabbit serum. Abstract —Nerve fibers displaying calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) immunoreactivity occurred in dental pulps of several mammals, including man. The CGRP fibers were more numerous in the apical parts than in the coronal parts and were distributed around small blood vessels as well as in the pulpal stroma without any obvious relation to blood vessels. The trigeminal, spinal and jugular‐nodose ganglia harbored a moderate supply of GGRP immunoreactive perikarya and nerve fibers. Immunocytochemic double staining revealed the coexistence of CGRP and SP in a population of perikarya in the sensory ganglia and suggested coexistence of the two peptides in perivascular nerve fibers in the cat dental pulp. The cervical sympathetic ganglia did not contain CGRP‐immnunoreactive perikarya. Cervical sympathectomy (studied in the guinea‐pig and rat) did not affect the frequency or distribution of pulpal CGRP fibers. The distribution of CGRP fibers within the dental pulp and the presence of CGRP perikarya in sensory ganglia known to supply the dental pulps indicate that the pulpal CGRP fibers are sensory in nature and that CGRP together with SP may participate in the regulation of local blood flow and the response to local infla

Abstract —The distribution of substance P‐immunareactive and silver impregnated nerve fibers in the temporomandibular joint soft tissues of the Macaca fascicularis monkey was investigated in frozen sections. The pattern of substance P‐immunoreactive structures in the soft tissues and periosteum of the temporomandibular joint was compared with the distribution of silver impregnated nerve fibers within these tissues. Presence of substance P‐immunoreactive fibers was demonstrated in the temporomandibular joint capsule, disc attachments, fascia, adjacent periosteum and within the interfascicular connective tissue of the lateral pterygoid muscle. The overall distribution corresponded to that of silver impregnated nerve fibers. Substance P‐immunoreactive nerve fibers were found in the adventitia of arteries in all vascularized temporomandibular joint soft tissues but could not be found in the adventitia of veins. No substance P‐immunoreactive or silver impregnated nerve fibers were seen in the dense collagenous tissue forming the disc. Abstract —Comparison of incidence of torus mandibularis and average number of present teeth among 2010 consecutive dental patients over 10 yr of age revealed that these variables seemed to be positively related: patients with torus mandibularis had on the average more teeth present than those without torus (P<0.0000001). The difference was statistically significant in all age classes except 50 years and over. In the adolescent age class, 10–19‐yr, patients with torus mandibularis had on the average fewer unerupted canines than those without torus indicating that the hyperostosis seemed to be associated with more adequately developed jaws. The decreasing incidence of torus mandibularis with age approximately paralleled the decreasing number of present teeth, indicating that number of functioning teeth seems to be a factor of importance for the maintenance of the

Abstract —The aim of the study was to evaluate whether general anxiety and dental anxiety were more common in a group of parenteral drug addicts. 41 drug addicts x̄=27.4 yr) attending a dental clinic in Aarhus in Denmark participated. A randomly sampled reference group comprising 350 individuals living in Aarhus and with similar age distribution was selected from the Central Person Register. Questionnaires with social and educational data and three self‐report rating scales, namely Corah's dental anxiety scale (CDAS) and Spielberger's State‐Trait anxiety inventory's two scales (STAI‐State and STAI‐Trait) were completed by the participants. Response rates were 95.6% and 89.3% for drug addicts and controls, respectively. Median CDAS, STAI‐State, and STAI‐Trait were 10, 46 and 44 in the addicts which was statistically significantly higher than in the general population. These differences were still present when the addicts were compared to a subsample from the reference group with a better matching of educational and social background factors. Spearman's correlation coefficient between CDAS and STAI‐State, CDAS and STAI‐Trait, and STAI‐State and STAI‐Trait were 0,57, 0.49 and 0.50, respectively, which were significant and moderately high correlations. Abstract —The present study was undertaken in order to evaluate whether electrodermal activity was a useful tool with which to measure dental anxiety in a group of drug addicts. Electrodermal activity was compared to the subjects' self‐reported feelings during ordinary dental treatment sessions. In the first part of the study the level of electrodermal activity during treatment sessions was videotaped and recorded on paper by means of a polygraph. The patients were interviewed using a semi‐structured questionnaire dealing with the addicts' dental anxiety and fear. In connection with the interviews the addicts completed Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale (CDAS). There was no recognizable pattern in electrodermal activity when this was compared with the patients' feelings during the treatments. Median CDAS was 9.5. In the second part of the study, electrodermal activity was recorded on the polygraph only. This group also completed a CDAS questionnaire. No correlation between the patients' self‐reported highest level of anxiety and level of electrodermal activity, number of fluctuations or amplitude in relation to specific dental stimuli was found; agreement was found in two, three and none of 10 cases respectively. Median CDAS was 10.0. It could be concluded that, although the study revealed apprehension and situational anxiety among the addicts, no correlation to electrodermal activity was found. Abstract —Seven non‐gamm‐amlgams and one conventional amalgam were used in the study. Cylindrical specimens were kept in a test solution for 1 yr. The depth of corrosion was measured and leakage of copper, zinc an mercury was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. EDX was used to analyze th corrosion products. The results showed that copper leakage from the non‐gamma‐amalgams was higher than from the conventional amalgam. The amount of copper in the solution was not related to the concentration in the alloy. Dissoltion of this ion was low during the last 6 months of the rate seemed to be less time dependent and leakage probably had not stopped after 1 yr.
