abstract–The concentrations of 12 different elements were measured in dentin and enamel of primary and permanent teeth collected in six different localities in Finland. Na, Cl, Al, Mn, Ca, and P were determined by neutron activation analysis, K, Mg, Zn, Cu, and Fe by the atomic absorption method, and F with the fluoride‐specific electrode. Most elements were present in higher concentrations in the enamel than in the dentin: Mg, however, was higher in the dentin. Compared with the permanent teeth, the primary teeth contained more K and Mn in enamel and K and Mg in dentin, but less Na and Zn in enamel. Differences between the six localities were significant for F, Cl, K, Zn, Na, and Mn. Fe, Cu, and Mn contents of teeth were much lower in Finland than elsewhere; in the typical Finnish diet the contents of Fe and Cu are relatively low and iron deficiency anemia is unusually common in Finl

abstract–Class I and Class II restorations on selected teeth of children aged 7–13 years were recorded in order to find which types of restorations were suitable for clinical evaluation of amalgam restorations with regard to frequency and anticipated observation period. Restorations suited for amalgam evaluation were found to be MO type restoration on all first molars and occlusal, palatal, and occlusal/palatal restorations on maxillary first molars and buccal pit restorations on mandibular first molars. For the age group 7–11 years, the MO type restoration in the first molars will reflect the caries situation; the DO type restoration on maxillary first molars will serve this purposes for an age group approximately 2–4 years older. Thus selected recording of restorations must be considered age dependent in order to give a representative reflection of the caries experience. abstract–The total effect of sucrose‐splitting activity from three sucrose metabolizing enzymes has been investigated in “resting” saliva in contact with dental plaque material in 356 military recruits. Invertase effect is defined as the splitting of sucrose into equimolar quantities of glucose and fructose, dextransucrase as a glucosyl‐transferase producing glucan and free fructose, and levansucrase as a fructosyl‐transferase producing fructan and free glucose. Total monohexose and glucose production as well were determined quantitatively in each subject. Monohexose production was related to specific oral conditions, and a difference in tooth decay significant at a 5% level was found between samples with high and low enzyme content. The production of free glucose was lower than that of free fructose, significant at less than a 1 % level. This may indicate that more glucose is bound to form dextran than fructose to form levan in this salivary enzyme system. In the saliva samples with a high level of enzyme content a slight increase in relative effect of dextransucrase was found. This was not statistically

abstract–Correlations were sought between indices of gingival inflammation and dental caries experience and serum antibody titers to five species of oral bacteria. The material comprised 53 young adult males. A statistically significant, negative correlation was observed between the antibody titer to a pool ofVeillonellastrains and dental caries experience. abstract–A study on the predominant cultivable microorganisms harbored in the base of deep periodontal pockets of eight patients aged 34–48 years was carried out using the roll tube culture technique. abstract–Culture filtrates (extracellular components) and material obtained from disintegrated cells (intracellular components) of cultured plaque bacteria were studied for their capacity to induce inflammatory reactions in the dental pulp. Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of 94 teeth: 42 test and 52 control teeth in six adult monkeys. Lyophillzed bacterial components were sealed into the test cavities either alone or following an 8‐h topical application of a solution of the same components in phosphate‐buffered saline (PBS). Culture medium and PBS were applied in two sets of control cavities. A third set was restored with zinc oxide‐eugenol cement. The animals were killed 32 h after the initiation of the experiment and the pulps were examined histologically. Teeth treated with extra‐ and intracellular components from bacteria elicited marked infiltration of neutrophil leukocytes in the area of the pulp subjacent to the cut dentin tubules. Abscess formation was frequently found. The severe reactions which developed were independent of differences between individual animals and differences in thickness of the remaining dentin. The controls showed damage to the odontoblasts but little or no neutrophil infiltration. abstract–The study comprised 30 denture wearers with generalized simple or granular inflammation in the palate and 30 without (controls). Yeasts, mostly Candida species, were cultivated from the maxillary dentures of all subjects with inflammation and of 23 controls. Hyphae were found in the maxillary denture smears from 28 subjects with inflammation and from 18 controls. Thus it seems unjustified to consider the occurrence of hyphae pathognomonic of denture stomatitis. The pH of whole saliva did not differ in the two groups (inflammation: mean pH 6.5, control: 6.6). There was no clear relation, between the pH of resting saliva and the amount of fungal cultures. Thirty minutes after a mouth rinse with 10 ml of a 25% sucrose solution, the mean saliva pH had dropped equally in both groups. With regard to the denture plaque, samples taken 40 min after the rinse indicated a more pronounced acid production in the plaque associated with inflammation. The pH of “resting” plaque was also lower in the inflammation than in the control group (mean maxillary pH 5.7 and 6.3, respectively, α= 0.002). abstract–Maxillary acrylic plates, inoculated withCandida albicans, were inserted for 3 weeks in 10 monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) (Series I), and reinserted in five of the animals 8 weeks after removal (Series II). To suppress saliva flow oxyphencyclimine was injected intramuscularly (0.125 mg/kg) thrice daily for 3 weeks in six monkeys of Series I, while four controls received no drug. In Series II the oxyphencyclimine dose was doubled in three animals, and two controls were sham‐treated with sodium chloride. Mean saliva flow was reduced to 58 % after 1 week and to 63 % after 3 weeks with the low dose of oxyphencyclimine. The values with the high dose were 56 % and 64 %, respectively. After 1 week thrush had developed beneath the plates of all monkeys. The patches were more extensive and regressed slower with oxyphencyclimine. Enlarged lesions were seen with the double dose, In Series I intraepithelial invasion by hyphae was detected more frequently and longer after inoculation in the oxyphencyclimine group. abstract–Glucose, mannose, galactose, glucosamine, and fucose were detected by paper or thin‐layer chromatography, andN‐acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid) was identified by absorption spectroscopy in acid hydrolysates of pooled cyst fluid. Quantitation of these monosaccharides in 37 frozen‐stored cyst fluids and autologous sera showed that the average content of hexoses, hexosamine, and sialic acid in cyst fluid approximated that in serum, whereas cyst fluid contained significantly more fucose than did serum. Fifteen of the cyst fluids and samples of autologous serum were also analyzed for free glucose. A mean cyst fluid to serum concentration ratio of 0.48 was found.
