Abstract –Using light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) a study of the surface morphology of rat oral epithelium was undertaken. A good correlation was found between the LM and SEM findings in the demonstration of the characteristic differences in surface structure between completely and incompletely orthokeratinized areas of the rat oral epithelium. Completely keratinized epithelium (hard palate and attached gingiva) shows a surface layer of orderly arranged, closely approximated and overlapping cells. The individual cell surface shows a honeycomb pattern of interconnecting ridges surrounding depressions or micropits. Incompletely keratinized epithelium (buccal mucGsaT alveolar sulci, gingival crest and interpapillary area of the dorsum of the tongue) shows a very uneven, corrugated surface layer. There is considerable loss of cell cohesion with the formadoo of wide intercellular clefts. The individual cell surface is characterized by microplicatioris of irregular size and arrangement. The findings of the present investigation are discussed in the light of an idea previously put forward by the authors that a correlation exists between surface morphology of the keratinized rat oral mucosa and colonization and penetration of Candida organisms in experimental candidosi

Abstract –Acid phosphatase activity was studied biochemically in homogenates of secretory enamel organs from the rat. Incubations with crude homogenate failed to show distinct pH optima or kinetics characteristic for single enzymes. Crude homogenate activity was strongly inhibited by concentrations higher than 1 mM of NaF and Na‐tartrate, and higher than 10 mM of ZnSO4andp‐bromotetramisole oxalate. lOmM MgCl2gave a slight stimulation. CaCl2, KCl and EDTA were uneffective. Electrophoretic separation of the crude homogenate acid phosphatase on Triton X‐100 containing polyacrylamide gel demonstrated the presence of atleast three multiple forms of the enzyme. Two of them showed distinct pH optima at pH 4.4. The third one showed a broad pH plateau in the acid pH range. Kinetic studies of the three forms indicated single enzyme reactions. Two forms had electrophoretic mobilities similar to alkaline phosphatase. One form could be solubilized only after Triton X‐100 treatment. Abstract –Some properties of inorganic pyrophosphatase (PP, ase EC 3.6.1.1.) andp‐nitraphenylphosphatase (p‐NPPase EC 3.1.3.1) in the microsomal fraction of odontoblasts were investigated. The ratio of Mg2+: p‐NPP and Mg2+: PPifor optimal enzyme activities was 1:1. A mutual substrate competition for PPiase and p‐NPPase was described. In the presence of O.I mM EDTA, Mg2+alone was not able to reactivate p‐NPPase or PPiase. Instead, Zn2+and Co2+reactivated the PPiase, indicating they might act as cofactors for the enzyme. Mg2+increased the PPiase activity, probably because Mg PPi2‐was the true substrate for the enzyme. Abstract –The turnover of basement membrane macromolecules during tooth morphogenesis and odontobiast differentiation was examined by light microscopic autoradiography using3H‐fucose.35S‐sulfate and3H‐glucosamine. Marked incorporation into the basement membrane was found throughout the progressive development. Pulse‐chase experiments and prelabeling of tissue components indicated that glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans in the dental basement membrane are mainly derived from the enamel epithelium. During odontobiast differentiation, incorporation was increased at the epithelio‐mesenchymal interface at the site of differentiating mesenchymal cells. Abstract –The purpose of the present work was to analyze the boundary structures of fractured restorative resin/etched enamel bonds. The fracture patterns were studied by scanning electron and opdeal microscopy. The three main types of failure observed were classified as: apparent interfacial failure, failure in the bulk of the restorative resin and failure in the bulk of the enamel. Abstract –Mouthrinses with SnF2 in 11 subjects significantly reduced (P<0.01) the total colony forming units (CFU) count and the numbers of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis in plaque. The numbers of S. mutans and S. sanguis were significantly more reduced than was the total CFU count. After rinsing with SnF2 S. sanguis was present in 97% and S. mutans in only 42% of plaque samples from tooth surfaces where they were detected after rinsing with water. SnF2 also significantly reduced (P<0.01) the number of S. mutans in saliva. Mouthrinses with NaF did not markedly affect the number of S. mutans either in plaque or in saliv

Abstract –The frequency of successful analgesia and the frequency of general side effects during dental treatment of previous and present drug addicts were investigated in a controlled clinical study. A solution of xylocaine/adrenaline (20 mg/ml + 12.5 ug/ml) was used in a dose of 1.5 ml for 88 mandibular blocks in order to test the frequency of analgesia. Successful analgesia was recorded only if the patient experienced no pain in the operative area. The number of side effects such as unrest, anxiety, sweating, pallor and palpitation was recorded during another part of the study. The frequency of successful analgesia was lower among the previous and present drug abusers compared to the control group and the difference was statistically significant. A statistically higher number of side effects was recorded in both experimental groups. The meed for a higher dosage of local analgesic and the higher number of side effects is attributed to the fear and anxiety among this particular group of patients. Abstract –Specimens from human odontogenic keratocysts were subcutaneously transplanted to nude mice. The transplants were harvested after 14–66 d with a rate of successful recovery of 87%. The histologic epithelial features in the original odontogenic keratocyst and their transplants were essentially similar. This included a well‐defined basal cell layer composed of columnar and cuboidal cells, the number of cell layers and die keratinization pattern. Abstract –The aim of the study was to determine the humoral antibody response to Candida by means of hemagglutinin and precipitin tests and to correlate these results to yeast colonization in the oral sites and feces and to the relapse tendency after treatment; and furthermore, to evaluate whether Candida serology can serve as a tool to predict a denture stomatitis risk group. The serologic tests were performed by means of passive hemagglutination (HA) and immunoelectroosmophoresis (counterimmunoelectrophoresis, CIE) tests in 51 denture stomatitis patients and compared with 25 individuals in the reference group. There were significantly more patients with increased hemagglutinin titers (pos. ≥1:160) to Candida albicans polysaccharide (mannan) antigen and/or precipitin to crude C. albicans cytoplasmic antigen in serum (P<0.01) than in the reference group. In the denture stomatitis group there was no correlation between the presence of hemagglutinating and precipitating Candida antibody in serum and the parameters yeast colonization of the oral sites/feces, yeast score on the denture base and palatal erythema score. After local oral antimycotic treatment there was no significant change in the serum Candida hemagglutinin titers and serum predpitins. Abstract –Sucking habits and their relationship to posterior cross‐bite were studied in 4‐year‐old children (n = 588) living in the municipality of Huddinge on the outskirts of Stockholm. Previous or persisting sucking habits were registered for 88% of the children with dummy sucking as the dominating type (78%). At the age of 4 years 48% of all children still exhibited some form of sucking habit. The incidence of normal buccolingual occlusion steadily decreased in cases where sucking habits persisted. The increase in unilateral cross‐bite occurreoce was most pronounced in cases where the children continued sucking after 2 years of age. The variable “intensity of sucking habit” was significantly correlated to the occurrence of unilateral cross‐bite (P<0.05).
