abstract–The frequency of developmental disturbances in the permanent dentition due to traumatic injuries to primary teeth was examined in a Danish population sample consisting of 487 schoolchildren 9–17 years old. Of these children, 147 (30%) had a history of traumatic injuries to the primary dentition. Frequencies of 57.8% and 45.3% of developmental disturbances were found in the trauma and in the non‐trauma group, respectively. The folloing types of developmental disturbances were more frequent in the trauma group than in the non‐trauma group: (1) internal white enamel hypoplasia with a diameter of 0.5 mm or more, (2) internal and external white and yellow‐brown enamel hypoplasia, (3) white and yellow‐brown enamel hypoplasia and horizontal enamel hypoplasia. Internal white enamel hypoplasia with a diameter of less than 0.5 mm, and generalized internal and external white enamel hypoplasias were found with the same frequency in the two groups. abstract–The investigation concerns the preservation and demonstration of human mast cells in undemineralized material. The material comprised human apical granulomas and radicular cysts dissected from extracted teeth or obtained by apicoectomy and cyst removal. Chronically inflamed human gingiva, rat tongue, and rat peritoneum served as control tissues. The following fixations were tested: 4% formaldehyde solution buffered to pH 7.2, Newcomer's fluid, and a 4% aqueous solution of basic lead acetate with formalin 1:10 added. The following dyes and fluorochromes were tested: toluidine blue in various concentrations and at various pH values, Astra‐blue, the esterase substrate naphthol‐AS‐D‐chloroacetate in combination with GBC, acridine orange in various concentrations and at various pH values, berberine‐sulfate, and thioflavin T. Abundant mast cells were demonstrated in all granulomas and cysts with at least one of the staining methods tested. A 4% lead acetate solution with formalin added proved the best fixative for the preservation of the human mast cells, whereas staining with Astra‐blue appeared the superior technique for demonstrating the human mast cells. abstract–Thirty‐two isogenic and 12 allogenic first molar toothbuds from newborn rats, and 60 allogenic rat and 114 allogenic guinea pig dentin specimens treated in different ways, were implanted in the abdominal muscles of 26 rats and 27 guinea pigs for periods ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. While the non‐vital cytoplasmic substance of whole rat toothbuds was unable to induce heterotopic bone formation, demineralized or undemineralized rat and guinea pig dentin matrix did induce osteogenesis. The results indicated that dentin implanted heterotopically in young guinea pigs might be a suitable model for further studies on the induction of heterotopic bone formation since over 70% of the allogenic demineralized dentin implants in this group gave osteogenesis. It was also found that the bone induction process is retarded and the yield of new bone is low when the dentin is implanted undemineralized. abstract–The present investigation was carried out to establish an experimental model for the induction of heterotopic bone formation by demineralized dentin in guinea pigs. A total of 168 samples of allogenic dentin treated in different ways, as well as eight samples of striated muscle and eight samples of achilles tendon, were implanted in the abdominal muscles or subcutaneously in 43 male guinea pigs. Eight sham operations were also performed. The data indicated that allogenic dentin demineralized in 0.2 N HCl at 4°C for 48 h, lyophilized and sterilized in ethylene oxide gas, consistently induced heterotopic bone formation in about 70% when placed subcutaneously or in a pouch in the abdominal muscles of young male guinea pigs.
