abstract—Human epithelial cells (NCTG 2544) were grown as monolayer cultures in the presence of silicate cement disks (Bio‐trey 9®). A cytotoxic effect was found on thesurfaceof the disks after 24 h, whereas a corresponding effect was obviousaroundthe disks after incubation for 3 d. In the silicate cement cultures more glucose was utilized and more lactate formed per cell than in control cultures. In the presence of silicate cement, pH of the culture medium decreased during incubation, reaching 6.3–6.4 after 6 d. Phosphate, silicon, zinc, and fluoride were released into the medium from the silicate cement disks. The medium concentration of sodium, however, remained constant, and aluminum was not detected. The concentrations of calcium and magnesium decreased, and experiments with45Ca showed that calcium was bound to the silicate cement

abstract—Twenty‐six amalgam restorations were performed using the conventional amalgam technique, and 26 using the wet amalgam technique on the same Class II cavity model. For the marginal proximal areas the mean difference in residual mercury content between the two techniques was 5.0% and for the remainder of the restoration 3.6%. abstract—Six methods for active and passive recording of retruded position of the mandible were compared in an investigation carried out on 10 male volunteers, aged 22 to 27. The position of the mandible was recorded with the intraoral graphic method. The precision of the recording of the retruded position was highest when recorded by passive hinge movement, and lowest when recorded by active hinge movement and active retrusion from habitual occlusion. abstract—Six healthy human subjects performed grinding and clenching of teeth, to assess if pain releasing and strenuous muscular exercise causes a decrease or total stop of the blood flow through the temporal muscles, as measured by133Xenon clearance. The mean blood flow/volume of muscle tissue was 25.4 ml×min−1×l−1during rest, whereas the mean flow was 101.8 ml×min−1×l−1during grinding, and 62.9 ml×min−1×l−1during clenching. abstract—Extracts of 4‐day‐old dental plaque were fractionated on Sephadex® columns (G‐10; G‐25; G‐200). Five fractions were selected from the protein and conductivity peaks obtained in chromatograms. The chemotactic activity elaborated by the fractions was tested in the Boyden'sin vitromodel system. The permeability altering capacity of the plaque fractions was testedin vivoin a wound chamber. The results from thein vitroexperiments demonstrated that all fractions were chemotactic for rabbit neutrophil leukocytes. Substances of a low molecular size (mol. wt.∼5.000) elaborated, however, the peak chemotactic activity. The results from thein vivoexperiments showed that the plaque fractions induced an increased (1) vascular permeability, and (2) emigration of leukocytes from a granulation tissue vasculature. abstract—Heat‐cured, red‐pigmented acrylic dentures without teeth were eluted with 150 ml 0.1 N HC1, and the concentration of cadmium in the eluant was measured. abstract—Five μCi3H‐glycine/g body weight were administered to six rats 30 min prior to, and to six rats 24 h after, exposure to a single head roentgen dose of 500 r. abstract—The fibrinolytic activity of erupting teeth and their surrounding tissues was studied in 14 young rats with a modification of the histochemical fibrin slide technique. Frozen tape‐carried sections were coated with plasminogen‐rich or plasminogen‐poor fibrinogen, coagulated and incubated for 5 min to 1 h at 37°C. In the plasminogen‐rich fibrin, zones of lysis were produced within a few minutes, indicating release of tissue activator of the fibrinolytic system.
