Abstract –Rat molar and incisor tooth germs from gestational days 18–21 were homologously grafted to the anterior eye chamber of adult recipients. The fetal tooth transplants survived and grew considerably in the eye, attached to and vascularized from the anterior surface of the host iris. Grafts were examined histologically and compared with in situ controls after up to 6 months in oculo. Radiographic examinations of the grafts showed a normal rate of mineralization and a distinct enamel/dentin border after intraocular development. The size of the tooth grafts was somewhat smaller than in situ but the grafted teeth attained a form much resembling in situ incisors and molars. Light microscopy revealed a regular dentin and predentin, a distinct dentin/enamel border and a well innervated and vascularized pulp. No degenerative changes in dentin or enamel layers could be found in long‐term grafts (6 months). Abstract –A method for preserving the alveolar ridge of ankylosed and infrapositioned incisors and improving conditions for a subsequent prosthetic therapy is described and evaluated clinically and radiographically. The method involves removal of the crown and root filling from the root, which is retained and covered with a mucoperiosteal flap. Clinically, there were no postoperative complications and after the follow‐up a satisfactory prosthetic restoration was performed in all cases, regardless of the degree of infraposition before treatment. Abstract –The effect of sodium fluoride varnish (Duraphat) applications on proximal caries progression was studied during a 3‐yr period in 87 teenagers and compared to a control group (n= 107). In the fluoride varnish group the children were treated with fluoride varnish every third month during the experimental period. Abstract –The general protein synthesis in human gingival fibroblasts as measured by14C‐proline incorporation was only moderately inhibited by 10 mM NH4Cl during incubation for 36 h. The proportion secreted as noncollagen protein and recovered from the cellular fraction as collagen was not significantly affected, whereas a pronounced inhibitory effect on the secretion of collagen was evident after 24 h. This effect was dose dependent, with a significant inhibition of collagen secretion even at 2 mM ammonia. The applied concentrations of NH4Cl had no significant effect on the hydroxylation of prolyl residues in collagen. Ammonia had no inhibitory effect on the secretion of fibronectin, another major secretory protein from fibroblasts. Abstract –Six solid substrates were compared for suitability to support growth of spirochetes from 18 subgingival plaque samples in patients with advanced marginal periodontitis. The following substrates with rabbit serum were tested: BHIA‐SC + blood, RGCA‐SC + blood, GM‐1 ±blood and MGM‐1 ±blood. All media contained rifampicin and polymyxin B. After incubation in a glovebox (70% N2, 20% H2, 10% CO2) for 14 days spirochete colonies were semiquantitated and the colony morphologies described. The spirochetes in six of the primary samples and in the related colonies after cultivation were identified ultrastructurally by number of endoflagella. The results showed that the colony morphologies were more related to the substrate used than to the various types of spirochetes, and that individual colonies contained different types of spirochetes. The substrates MGM‐1, RGCA‐SC, and BHIA‐SC, all with blood, showed the highest recoveries of about 5%. Abstract –The cells and the cellular interactions in the gingival crevices of three patients with juvenile periodontitis (JP), three patients with adult periodontitis (AP) and one healthy control were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cells were collected by the washing method. The washings were either 1) fixed for 30 min in 2.5% glutaraldehyde (GA), or 2) cytocentrifuged onto a Melinex‐polyester film and fixed in GA. On the films the cells of interest were identified and light photomicrographs were taken before processing for SEM. Four types of cellular interactions were seen in SEM: between polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and epithelial cells, between PMNs and bacteria, between PMNs and between bacteria. Based on morphologic and structural interpretation, the PMNs in the local lesion in JP seemed 1) to have a different morphology from the PMNs of AP lesions, 2) to be capable of ingesting bacteria, 3) to accumulate in gingival pockets in numbers as high as in AP, and 4) to be overwhelmed by the challenge of bacteria and bacterial aggrega

Abstract –The binding affinity of four lectins to normal human buccal mucosa was studied. Biopsies (diameter 2 mm) were obtained from eight healthy volunteers. Cryostat cut sections (4 μm thick) were stained with the following FITC‐Conjugated lectins: Ulex europaeus I (UEA I) soybean (SBA), peanut (PNA) and Lens culinarius (LCA). The specificity of the staining was controlled using the respective sugars. UEA I stained the epithelial intercellular spaces from the upper stratum (str.) spinosum to str. superficiale. Vascular endothelium in the connective tissue was also stained by UEA I. SBA stained the intercellular spaces of str. spinosum, whereas PNA stained both str. spinosum and str. superficiale. LCA stained the basement membrane and the intercellular areas of str. basale and str. spinosum. The elastic fibers of connective tissue were probably also stained by LCA. Abstract –A multifactorial grading system was devised for the histologic classification and grading of malignancy in carcinoma of tongue and floor of mouth. The system is presented with all morphologic variables defined and illustrated. Statistical analysis of the classification of 52 cases of squamous cell carcinoma revealed that the reproducibility of the system by two independent observers was good for all morphologic variables. Mean total malignancy, tumor cell population, and tumor‐host relationship scores showed statistically significant correlations with mean ratings for all the different morphologic parameters, with certain specified exceptions.
