abstract—In order to investigate the influence of mental development on children's acceptance of dental treatment, the mental ages of 108 individuals with a chronologic age of 3–9 years were determined by a psychologist using Binet's, Cattell's, and Leiter's psychometric tests. The degree of acceptance in accordance with given definitions and the time spent for acceptance were recorded. Mental age as well as chronologic age influence children's acceptance of dental treatment, but mental age has the greater influence. A mental age of 29 months separated in this investigation distinctly between children with and without acceptance. Children with mental ages of 3 and 4 years needed 20% more time to accept treatment than did children with higher mental ages. The time‐span for acceptance was 20% greater for 3‐year‐old children than for older children when IQ values were ≥68. abstract—Different fixation and deminerahzation methods were used in combination with fresh frozen and paraffin embedded pulps from 60 human and 23 monkey teeth. Alcian blue and azure A staining revealed acid mucopolysaccharides in granular and nongranular forms in both monkey and human pulps. The nongranular material was confined to the apical area and appeared similar in both species. Granules were found only along fiber bundles in the human pulp, whereas in monkey pulp, granules were located intracellularly in the subodontoblastic area and extracellularly in the middle part of the pulp. The mucopolysaccharides were classified according to their sensitivity to hyaluronidase and neuraminidase, and to their staining at varying pH‐values. abstract—An experimentalCandidainfection of the palatal mucosa was produced in 14Macaca irusmonkeys by inoculatingC. albicansunder an acrylic plate. Half of the animals were subjected to immunosuppressive therapy (azathioprine) for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after infection. The course of development of the cellular and humoral immune response toC. albicanswas assessed using the leukocyte migration test and the agglutination reaction, respectively.Normal animals:migration inhibition was significant from 1 week to 5 months after infection. Cellular hypersensitivity developed concomitantly with clearing of the infection, while antibody was not yet detectable. As the antibody titer rose, cellular hypersensitivity declined.Azathioprine‐treated animals:the infection persisted and cellular hypersensitivity did not develop until 1–3 weeks after the treatment with azathioprine was discontinued. On the other hand, the humoral antibody response was early and strong. Clinically and histologically, inflammation was reduced as compared withnormalanimals and intraepithelial invasion by hyphae was seen. abstract—In vitrocellular hypersensitivity and agglutinating antibody toC. albicanswas assessed in 180 subjects of whom 55 were patients withCandida‐induced denture stomatitis (25 with the generalized simple and 30 with the granular type) whereas 16 had traumainduced lesions in the palatal mucosa. Patients with other candidal manifestations, such as cutaneous candidiasis (5), vaginal candidiasis (3),Candidaleukoplakia (1), chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (2), and appropriate controls were included in the study. Using the leukocyte migration test, cellular hypersensitivity toC. albicanswas demonstrated in 76% of the patients with the generalized simple type of denture stomatitis and in most of the patients with vaginal or cutaneous candidiasis. However, only 28% of the patients with the granular type of denture stomatitis and none of those with mucocutaneous candidiasis showed significant inhibition of migration. Upon antifungal therapy of 13 patients, cellular hypersensitivity was restored. The increase of the cellular immune response toC. albicanswas most pronounced for the granular type of denture stomatitis. In the infected patients an inverse relationship was demonstrated between cellular hypersensitivity and agglutinating antibody titer toC. albicans. The immediate increase in leukocyte response toC. albicansthat was demonstrated after antifungal therapy was taken as indirect evidence that aCandidainfection may lead to a suppression of the systemic cellular immune response toC. albic

abstract—Cyclophosphamide in doses of 25, 50, 75. 100, 125, and 150 mg/kg was administered to 60 rats in 6 groups. Histomorphologic investigations of maxillary and mandibular incisors two weeks later revealed the following dose‐dependent reactions: (1) interruped odontogenesis, (2) circular and mesio‐distal dental constrictions, (3) niche‐like dentinal defects, (4) differentiation of a postexperimental tooth, and (5) cyst formation and circulatory disturbances. abstract—Five μCi 3H‐glycine/g bodyweight were administered to 10 rats 30 min prior to, and to 10 rats 24 h after 25 or 40 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide. Fourteen rats served as control material. Autoradiographic investigations of the incisors demonstrated the preodontoblasts to be the odontoblast developmental stage most sensitive to cyclophosphamide, succeeded by precursors of preodontoblasts. The injury was reflected as a reduced production of circumpulpal dentin. The sensitive period was approximately equivalent to maximally 48 h, minimally 24 h. abstract—A histologic and histochemical study was made of 45 odontogenic periapical cysts and granulomas with cholesterol formation. The specimens were transported in Histocon® solution and sectioned by cold microtome. This technique permits the preservation of the lipids and rertains the enzyme activities in the cells. abstract—A model system has been developed to study the formation of plaque in natural, human, enamel fissures. Surgically removed, fully impacted third molars were used. The occlusal two‐thirds of the crowns were separated from the teeth and sonicated. The specimens were then placed on a bridge or an acrylic appliance and exposed to the oral environment for 0, 1, 2, 3 and 5 d. The experimental fissures were then subjected to microbiologic and ultrastructural analysis.
