摘要:
Self‐acceptance has been identified as a key element in successful rehabilitation of physically disabled adults. This study sought to identify factors that contributed to self‐acceptance. Four factors were investigated as predictors of self‐acceptance. Using the multiple regression statistics, the study found that knowledge of disability and perceived physical ability comprised a significant portion of the variance of self‐acceptance. The Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficent Analysis indicated that both factors have a significant correlation to self‐acceptance. The other factors, interpersonal support and self‐care, did not form a significant portion of the variance in self‐acceptance. They also did not have a significant correlation with se

摘要:
Knowledge of differences between men and women in adjustment to a chronically ill partner should be of interest to nurses concerned with the rehabilitation of families. Individual characteristics (demographic variables, social and economic resources) and disease‐related factors were examined to determine their effects on adjustment. The sample consisted of 33 husbands and 47 wives with ill partners, purposively selected from a variety of sources and representing a variety of chronic illnesses. Although there were no significant differences between the two groups on adjustment measures, item analysis of the scales revealed that wives more often than husbands were dissatisfied with their present lives (51% vs. 41%) and sometimes wanted to leave home (26% vs. 9%). Husbands, more often than wives, experienced difficulty sleeping (30% vs. 23%) and fatigue upon awakening (27% vs. 17%). Both groups reported the greatest gains in the homemaker and spouse roles with husbands reporting the larger gains. For husbands, 4 of 10 social resource variables, 3 of 14 economic resource variables, and 5 of 10 disease‐related factors were significant correlates of adjustment, compared with 6 social resource variables, 10 economic resource variables, and 6 disease‐related factors for wives. In general, variables relating to the psychosocial adjustments for husbands and wives were different. These findings could provide a basis for assessment of gender differences in spouse adjustment to chronic illn

摘要:
Poststroke sexuality is not frequently discussed with stroke patients or with their sexual partners during rehabilitation. A support group of 37 spouses discussed the lack of health education, performance fears, aspects of sexual conditioning, acceptance of change, and options for coital positioning. This article reports the results of these discussions.

摘要:
In January 1983, the department of rehabilitation nursing at the Arkansas Rehabilitation Institute (ARI), Little Rock, AR began the process of developing a patient classification system (PCS). Previously, patients were subjectively classified in one of three categories: self‐care, partial care, or heavy care. This system did not adequately quantify nursing care hours nor justify the staffing pattern. Consequently, a new patient classification system was sought. This paper will provide information on the process used to develop and implement a patient classification system (PCS) using the GRASP syste

摘要:
This study compares the functional gains of CVA patients treated with the traditional nursing approach (N = 38) and CVA patients treated with a therapeutic nursing approach based on Bobath neurodevelopmental principles. The therapeutic nursing approach was developed to update nursing care of CVA patients at a large rehabilitation center. This approach focused care on bilateral activity—stimulation, involvement, and sensory input on the affected side; and integration of nursing—physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Functional abilities were measured using the modified Barthel Index administered on admission and discharge. The CVA patients treated with the therapeutic nursing approach demonstrated a significantly higher level of functional gain than CVA patients treated with the traditional nursing approach (p = ◂.05) with right CVA patients (left hemiplegics) making the most improvement. In this situation, the therapeutic nursing approach appeared to be the treatment of choice for the care of CVA pat
