摘要:
This article demonstrates the need for an awareness of how patients communicate a readiness for information about altered sexuality. Rehabilitation nurses observed behaviors of spinal cord‐injured males communicating their need for this information. The article recommends nursing actions and future resear

摘要:
Sixty‐seven patients admitted to a geriatric rehabilitation unit were assessed from admission to discharge by their primary nurses for functional outcomes and demographic characteristics. The patients had a mean age of 78.1 years and a mean length of stay of 58.6 days. Patients with an admitting diagnosis of a recent leg amputation were discharged more independent in ADL than those admitted following a recent stroke. Sixty‐nine percent of the patients were discharged home. Patients sent home were significantly more independent in ADL than those who did not return home. Almost all patients continued to improve in physical ADL and felt they were managing adequately or well in the home sett

摘要:
This study evaluated time out of bed as (a) a means of documenting spinal cord patients' physical and psychological status and (b) a predictor of complications. Sixty spinal cord injured patients admitted to a physical rehabilitation hospital for comprehensive rehabilitation were subjects. An electronic device, the Rest Time Monitor (RTM), measured time spent out of bed. Medical records provided information on significant events. Patterns of time out of bed quantitatively documented the occurrence of several medical complications and emotional upsets. Patients who experienced infections spent less time out of bed prior to onset than did control patients. Time out of bed can be used by clinical staff and researchers to document the physical and psychological status of the patients and potentially to predict the onset of some complications.

摘要:
Adjustment to disability following a stroke may involve coming to terms with a variety of losses. The purpose of this exploratory, cross‐sectional survey was to describe losses experienced following a stroke as perceived by patients and their spouses. The data were derived from interviews with 60 middle‐aged and older couples in which one person had suffered a stroke. Content analysis of the responses to open‐ended questions about perceived losses yielded three major categories of loss: 1. activities, 2. abilities and characteristics, and 3. independence. The loss most often mentioned by patients was mobility; by spouses, traveling. When responses were examined by sex, the loss mentioned most frequently by both male and female spouses identified traveling as what they missed most after the stroke. Examination of losses in relation to length of time since the stroke revealed independence as a prominently mentioned loss for most groups. Comparison by cerebral hemisphere damaged revealed that patients with right‐brain damage missed their independence while patients with left‐brain damage missed mobility. The findings of this study support two major aspects of rehabilitation nursing practice: facilitation of patient independence, and consideration of spouse or caregiver's need for support or respite care on a long

摘要:
Recent technological advances in the care of the hemophiliac patient have brought new challenges for health care professionals. These challenges include attention to both physical and psychosocial aspects of this disorder. Refinement of the replacement therapy and increased education of patients and their families will enable hemophiliacs to improve the quantity and quality of their lives.
