摘要:
Rehabilitation nurses (n = 37) were surveyed concerning indicators of family capacity for participation during the hospitalization phase of the rehabilitation process. Findings revealed that family variables considered most important to measure are willingness to help with patient care, coping patterns, knowledge of illness or disability, the patient's expectations, and the family's economic status. Results showed that most patients have family members available to participate in the rehabilitation process, but that family involvement usually consists only of learning patient care.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to validate a vertical visual analogue scale (VVAS) as a measure of clinical dyspnea. Concurrent validity was demonstrated by having asthmatics score their dyspnea intensity on both a VVAS and a horizontal visual analogue scale (HVAS), and then measuring their peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). Correlation between the VVAS and HVAS wasr=.97; between the VVAS and the PEFR, correlation wasr=−.85, demonstrating the concurrent validity of the VVAS as a measure of dyspnea. Construct validity then was established, using the contrasted‐groups approach with repeated measures. Both asthmatics and those with chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) rated their dyspnea on the VVAS during times of severe and little airway obstruction. The dyspnea ratings at times of severe versus low obstruction were found to be different for both the asthmatic and COPD subjects. The VVAS was shown to have both concurrent and construct validity as a measure of dysp

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to identify sequelae that occurred in persons with spinal cord injuries 11 weeks to 5 years after discharge from two initial rehabilitation programs. The investigator‐developed instrument was first administered to a convenience sample of 21 subjects (Adamski, 1983). The modified version of the instrument was administered to a probability sample of 19 subjects in the present study. The results demonstrated that respondents experienced a higher incidence of medical sequelae than has been documented in the literature. These findings have important implications for nursing practice in developing and evaluating educational programs for persons with spinal cord injurie

摘要:
Improved self‐care and functioning are the ultimate goals of work with the elderly client. An essential component of rehabilitation nursing is teaching the client how to achieve these goals. Gradual changes in function occur with age; in addition, vision, hearing, and memory deficits are inevitable in the aging adult. But individualized assessment and select approaches can overcome these barriers to learnin

摘要:
The purpose of this research study was to develop and test a screening tool to determine the readiness of children with myelodysplasia to self‐catheterize. The tool was developed after identifying requisite skills for self‐catheterization. Twenty‐five clients with myelodysplasia who required intermittent catheterization for bladder management—all under 18 years of age—were screened using the tool. Based on their previously demonstrated ability to self‐catheterize, the children were divided into two groups: those who did self‐catheterize and those who did not. The 18 children who self‐catheterized all passed each item on the screening tool. The 7 children who did not self‐catheterize failed one or more items on the screening tool. Based on this small sample, the tool offers a simple, safe way to judge readiness to learn sel
