摘要:
AbstractThe development of new wear/corrosion resistant coatings for extruder barrel applications in the food and plastics processing industry is reviewed and the surface engineering philosophy discussed in conjunction with detailed analysis of the degradation mechanisms. The new coating approach combines conventional powder metallurgy technology with a novel method of structuring the coating both laterally and in a direction normal to the surface. In this technique the powders are consolidated by hot isostatic pressing to optimise the structure and interfacial adhesion.

AbstractSurface topographic features of plasma nitrided En40B steel have been investigated in the present work using the multitrace prolifometric technique recently developed for three-dimensional characterisation of engineering surfaces. It is shown that, during plasma nitriding, cones of various morphologies tend to form on the surface, such that the finished nitrided surface is densely populated with cones of varying sizes. The formation of cones on the surface during nitriding is affected not only by parameters such as temperature, time, and gas pressure, but also by the original surface topography. In conjunction with metallographic examination of well prepared microsections and metallurgical results obtained by others, the mechanisms associated with surface topographic changes during plasma nitriding are discussed. The potential influence of plasma nitrided surface topography on tribology under highly stressed contact conditions is briefly discussed in terms of various calculated functional parameters for each surface investigated.

AbstractThe technique of neutron strain scanning is describedand its application to through surface measurement of the residual stress field of metal components is discussed.The technique is particularly suitable for non-destructive internal strain and stress mapping since the neutron is a relatively penetrating particle and measurements an be made, in principle, at any point in any orientation throughout a component, subject to neutronbeam attenuation and spatial resolution constraints. The technique is less well suited to measurements made olely in the outermost surface layers but may be used to obtain data through the surface into a component,provided instrumental surface effects are allowed for during data processing or are reduced to negligible values by instrument design and careful measuring procedures. Illustrative examples are given of experimentalresults obtained on a series of metal components, including autofrettaged tubes, new and used railway rails, and peened surfaces in which steep near surface stress gradients are observed.

摘要:
AbstractResidual stress distributions around plain and cold expanded fastener holes in aluminium alloy 7050–T76 have been measured using the X-ray diffraction sin2Ψmethod. Both radial and hoop stresses have been measured as a function of distance from the edge of the hole on the mandrel inlet and outlet faces. The effect of fatigue loading on the residual stress distribution around cold expanded holes has been investigated and is discussed in relation to measured fatigue endurance. The effect of the X-ray beam size on the resolution of the technique in the vicinity of the hole has been studied and life predictions incorporating the measured residual stresses have been correlated with fatigue endurance.
