摘要:
AbstractBy using the plasma CVD method with hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide gas mixtures with hydrogen, a synthesised diamond film was deposited on cutting tools. In order to clarify the wear characteristics and cutting performance of the diamond coated tools, turning tests were carried out on Al–Si alloy, carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CF RP), and glass fibre reinforced polymer ( GFRP ). The diamond coated tools were found to have a cutting performance equal to that of sintered diamond tools when machining materials which did not present the greatest cutting difficulties such as low Si Al alloys, GFRP, and CFRP. However, when machining high Si Al alloys, the synthesised diamond film showed a cutting performance inferior to that of sintered diamond tools.

AbstractThe wear of balls of N ion implanted Ti and Ti6Al4V alloy bearing against cups of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene was investigated using a simulator to approximate the conditions of an artificial hip joint. Differences in polymer wear rates related to variations in the surface finish of the balls, but not to ion implantation, were observed. The wear resistance of the femoral heads was significantly improved by ion implantation. Analysis of the lubricant showed lower concentrations of metal from the ion implanted specimens compared to non-implanted controls. After 106cycles in the simulator, the equivalent of approximately 1 year's use of a hip prosthesis in a patient, significant parts of the specimens' ion implanted layers had worn away. This metallic wear was more extensive with the Ti samples than those of Ti6Al4V. Since the wear conditions in the laboratory simulation may be more aggressive than is typical in patients, the rate of wear of the ion implanted layer in actual use needs to be established from measurements on components removed from patients.

AbstractThere is a continuing requirement for improved bearing performance for both commercial and military applications. Service temperatures are increasing steadily due to increased power requirements and corrosion of components remains a major concern as well, particularly for bearings in military systems. In our ongoing study, a number of different coatings were applied to VIM–VAR M50 bearing steel to improve both corrosion resistance and rolling contact fatigue behaviour. This report deals with coatings from the ion beam assisted deposition (I BAD) of TiN, details of the coating process, and test results obtained. The rolling contact fatigue performance of IBAD TiN coated M50 samples, measured with a ball/rod tester at a contact Hertzian stress of 5420 MN m-2, is discussed. Preliminary data on corrosion properties are also presented.

AbstractThe use of aluminium nitride (AIN) as a corrosion protection coating for mild steel is discussed. For comparison, the corrosion protection capability of Al and AI–AIN cermet coatings on mild steel is also examined. The coatings,∼1.0μm thick, were grown on water cooled steel substrates by sputtering an Al target in 5N2–95 (Ne1-x+ Arx) discharges. Coating crystallography, morphology, surface chemistry, and electrical resistivity were determined prior to corrosion testing. Surface chemistry was also determined after exposure to the electrolyte. Cathodic polarisation electrochemical measurements were used to determine the corrosion rate. Electrolyte pH measurements were carried out to measure 0H-ion concentration resulting from the interaction of the coating with the electrolyte. Microcrystalline AlN coated steel was found to corrode at a rate of 1.5 orders of magnitude slower than uncoated steel, and 2 orders of magnitude slower than Al coated steel. The selfsealing porous electrode model of the corrosion process is presented, which describes the AlN coating as a barrier to both H+diffusion and electromigration.
