摘要:
Summary:Recent studies of prehistoric rock art have analysed its position in the landscape and have suggested that it played an important role in a mobile pattern of settlement. But the distribution of petroglyphs is usually taken as given, with the result that it is difficult to assess the significance of this kind of patterning. We argue that such evidence should be compared with the distribution of uncarved rocks across the surrounding area, and illustrate this procedure by two case studies from northern England. In these examples rock carvings were carefully sited at viewpoints and may have overlooked important routes across the landscape.

摘要:
Summary:It has been suggested that some Palaeolithic objects show traces of long‐term handling, suspension or transport. However, no criteria have been established for identifying such traces and differentiating them from other traces of natural or human origin. Handling, suspension, polishing with skin and transport of bone, antler and ivory objects have been reproduced experimentally and observed by optical microscopy and SEM. the width of striations seems to be the only criterion for differentiating handling, suspension and polishing. the transport of a single bone object in a leather bag produces striations of different dimensions to those produced by handling. the differentiation between traces of transport and those due to polishing with skin are more problematic. the transport of several bone objects in the same bag results in traces that differ according to the morphology and the hardness of the objects accompanying them. In particular, the pits generated by knocking against each other enable one to identify the nature of the other objects. Finally, analyses of bone objects known to have been subjected to long‐term handling and archaeological objects dating from the Solutrean and Magdalenian cultures were compared with the experimental resu

摘要:
Summary:Research in the west Pontic region over the last twenty‐five years has considerably increased the information available from the mesolithic through to the beginning of the Bronze Age, but, it is argued, there has been little consideration of the long‐term cultural structure of the region. Taking the accepted differentiation of coastal and inland cultures throughout the period as reflecting ‘structured’interaction, the article reviews the current state of evidence and discusses the similarities and differences between the two regions through time. It is argued that the cultural structure is maintained principally through ritual activities which show considerable continuity over time. the importance of these long‐term phenomena in the interpretation of social organization in the region is

摘要:
Summary:The palaeoenvironment of north‐west Portugal is investigated from the late Bronze Age to Roman times. This research is based on the analysis of charcoal from seven archaeological sites. the results contain important information for a better understanding of the vegetational environment of man during this period. Man‐environment relations are also exami

摘要:
Summary:The appearance of large sites known as oppida, and generally qualified as urban or proto‐urban, is a central feature of all accounts of late Iron Age Europe. But the category of oppidum groups together sites that are very diverse in morphology, scale and function, and excludes other sites that share many of the same features, but lack fortifications and/or are located outside the supposed heartland of the oppida civilisation. Few oppida seem to be at the centre of differentiated settlement networks of the kind usually associated with urbanism, and few display a higher level of intra‐site zoning than do rural farms or hamlets. A reassessment of late La Tène settlement, focusing on its technological and cultural unity, contributes to an analysis of late prehistoric Europe which stresses the contrasts between the social trajectories of temperate European and Mediterranean socie

摘要:
Summary:The fine red terra sigillata pottery of Italy, associated in both ancient and modern times with the Etruscan town of Arezzo, is now known to have been produced in many different parts of the peninsula. Indeed, it is clear that some of the largest factories were capable of setting up distant manufacturing subsidiaries in order to take advantage of particular markets. It is also becoming apparent that the potters working at Arezzo itself might supply their products to quite distinct provincial or regional markets from one another. It is hoped that research now under way will clarify such complex patterns of manufacture and trade.
