摘要:
Summary:A major climatic ‘event’is known from the 17th century BC, and some scientists and archaeologists have sought to associate it with the large Late Bronze Age eruption of the Thera volcano in the Aegean. Sulphur production is the key to the climatic impact of a volcanic eruption, and petrologic estimates of the sulphur production of the Thera eruption appeared to show that it was far too small to have caused the climatic event, and, in particular, the 17th century BC sulphuric acid spike in a Greenland ice‐core. However, study of recent eruptions demonstrates that petrologic estimates can be very significant under‐estimations, and so the Theran sulphur production may have been much greater than presently thought. Therefore Thera is again a candidate as the cause of the 17th century BC climatic disturbances, and, from current chronometric evidence, perhaps the best candidate. Further multi‐parameter chronometric research could very soon enable possibilities and probabilities to become more

摘要:
Summary:It is suggested that the Wild Goat style began and was formed at Miletus and later was adopted with variations by other East Greek cities, and that when around 600 BC the North Ionian school developed a successful incising style, the old style persisted elsewhere, probably till the advent of Fikellura about 560 BC. Fikellura, it is argued, was a sudden creation, without a long transitional stage.

摘要:
Summary:The predominance of the standing female figure, the kore, among the archaic statuary of the Athenian Acropolis (more than half of the documented statues or groups) is well known. But what motivated this preference? the inscriptions from the bases and supports for the archaic dedications of the Acropolis provide a means of answering this question if one assumes that the survival of dedicatory inscriptions is no less random than that of the statues they once identified. Two groups stand out among the dedicators, first the aristocrats and other leaders, second the business class. While the first group could celebrate agonistic triumph, political and religious office, military achievement and status with an aristocratic galaxy of nude kouroi, clothed male figures, horses and riders, and even dogs, the business men (and women) seeking a representation suggesting prosperity and success preferred the kore.

摘要:
Summary:Turdetania was one of the Iron Age cultural blocks which emerged after the disintegration of Tartessos in the later 6th century BC. It corresponded largely to the lower Guadalquívir valley of southern Spain. From the early 2nd century BC it formed the heart of the Roman province of Hispania Ulterior and, from the later 1st century BC, Hispania Baetica. This paper sets out to examine the Romanisation of the region from an indigenous perspective rather than a Romano‐centric viewpoint. Until the mid‐first century BC Roman impact was negligble and merely served to reinforce the Turdetanian prestige goods economy. Subsequently, however, the foundation of coloniae and a consequent increase in commercial activity were catalysts for rapid change. A new hierarchy of dominant and dependent centres arise and, by the early 1st century AD, the agricultural wealth of the region was being more directly exploited for Rome's benefit. This relatively ‘delayed’Romanisation is interpreted as native resistance to cultura

摘要:
Summary:As guardian of the long and important Middle Danubian limes, Roman Pannonia protected the central provinces of the Empire. Despite a mass of defensive structures, the limes was progressively overrun from the later 4th century and Pannonia was eventually ceded to the Huns in 430. Subsequently the region fell victim to Germans and eastern nomads and stability of a sort was only restored with the establishment of the Hungarian State in the late 10th century. This paper examines the question of settlement change between the 4th and 10th centuries, viewing the degree to which the various invaders maintained, ignored or replaced the network of Roman structures. It is argued that only with difficulty can physical continuity be securely traced and in these instances the character of settlement changes greatly over time.

摘要:
Summary:This paper looks at the organisation of medieval tileries, concentrating particularly on kiln sites thought to have produced floor tiles. Models for different forms of organisation are applied to excavated sites. the economic implications of changes in modes of operation are discussed.
