摘要:
Summary:Recent work on the early neolithic of western France has demonstrated the importance of influences and ideas from both the early farming communities of the Paris basin and the early neolithic groups of the Mediterranean zone. the complex pattern resulting from the interplay of these two sources has led to lively debates about the origins of the megalithic tombs of Brittany and west‐central France. Much emphasis has been placed on the impact of neolithic expansion from the east and its role as cause or catalyst in the development of megalithic tombs. the present article argues that explanations which look to the east for the origin of west French megaliths pay insufficient attention to the nature of early megalithic tombs, especially passage graves, as an essentially Atlantic phenomeno

摘要:
Summary:Lead isotope analysis of metal are deposits in the Mediterranean provides an important database for provenance studies of ancient metal artefacts. the Isotrace laboratory at Oxford has accumulated during the past decade well over 2000 lead isotope data on copper and lead ores and these data (in addition to analyses published by other groups) can be used for comparisons with lead isotope compositions of ancient metal objects. In a search for the roots of Early Bronze Age metallurgy in Europe we have analysed 34 copper‐based objects from the Early Bronze Age strata of the town of Thermi on the Aegean island of Lesbos. the results of lead isotope analysis show that the metal objects on this site have a quite varied origin. Some of the objects are made of copper consistent with an origin from the mineral deposits of the Troad whilst others might be made of copper from the Cyclades. However, there are also some objects which are not made of copper from any of the Aegean deposits. These imports have later parallels on the site of Kastri on Syros and amongst the objects excavated by Schliemann at Tro

摘要:
Summary:The authors consider the specific nature and possible provenance of the various rock types commonly described as ‘jades’or ‘greenstones’from which some of the prehistoric axes and adzes in southern Italy and Sicily were made. Despite the presence of jadeite‐rich pyroxenes in Calabrian metamorphic rocks, a non‐local origin, probably in the north Italian or Alpine zone, seems more likely for ‘jadeite’implements in the south. By contrast, nephrite and serpentinite artifacts probably derive from sources in southern Basilicata, Calabria, and possibly northeastern Sicily, where alluvial deposits or natural outcrops could have been exploited. Certain aspects of procurement and techniques of manufacture are comparable with others recorded ethnographically. Evidence emerges for long‐distance as well as local and inter

Summary:The high incidence of young calves and mature females in faunal assemblages is often interpreted as being indicative of the practice of specialised dairying. an alternative model is suggested here on the basis of faunal and documentary evidence from the early historical period in Ireland

摘要:
Summary:The episode of prolific coin hoarding in Roman Britain betweenc.259 and 287 has never been fully explained. This paper looks at a major group of these hoards; those recognised as containing irregularantoniniani. Two distinct sub‐groups are identified, which are shown to have non‐random, almost mutually exclusive, distributions. an explanation for coin hoarding is considered which associates the location of certain deposits with the spread of coin use to new, marginal, areas of Brit

摘要:
Summary:Residuality has long been recognized as a problem for those interpreting archaeological assemblages, in particular those from urban excavations. This paper explores residuality through the examination of quantified pottery assemblages from a number of British sites. the causes of variation in the level of residuality at particular sites are discussed and general conclusions are drawn about the importance of the different factors isolated.
