Anaesthesia was induced in 60 healthy adults using four different induction agents with 15 individuals in each group. After induction, a dose of 50 mg suxamethonium was injected in all the patients. The serum potassium was recorded before induction (K1), after induction (K2) and after suxamethonium administration (K3). The fall in potassium during induction of anaesthesia was less than 3%, and there were no significant differences between the induction agents with regard to this initial potassium fall.The potassium increase after suxamethonium, measured as the change from K2to K3, ranged from 5.3% in the thiopentone group up to 12.7% in the halothane‐nitrous oxide group. A multiple comparison test showed that the increase in the last group was significantly greater than in each of the three groups induced with thiopentone, diazepam or propanidid. No significant differences could be demonstrated among the three latter. When the smaller changes from K1to K3were used, the only two groups of patients differing significantly in the potassium rise were the halothane‐nitrous oxide group compared with the thiopentone group alone.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGBei 60 gesunden Erwachsenen wurde die Narkose mit 4 verschiedenen Einleitungsagentien eingeleitet, jeweils 15 in jeder Gruppe. Allen Patienten wurde nach der Einleitung je 50 mg Suxamethonium injiziert. Kaliumbestimmungen im Serum wurden vor der Narkoseeinleitung (K2), nach der Einleitung (K2) und nach der Suxamethoniumgabe (K3) vorgenommen. Der K‐Abfall während der Einleitung war geringer als 3% und bezüglich dieses initialen Absinkens des K‐Spiegels gab es keine signifikanten Unterschiede zwischen den Einleitungsagentien.Der Kaliumstieg nach Suxamethonium, gemessen als Unterschied zwischen K2und K3, bewegte sich von 5,3% in der Thiopentalgruppe bis 12,7% in der Halothan‐Lachgas‐Gruppe. Der Mehrfach‐Vergleichstest ergab, daβ der K‐Anstieg in der letzten Gruppe signifikant höher als in jeder der drei an‐deren Gruppen war, bei denen die Einleitung mit Thiopental, Diazepam, bzw. Propanidid erfolgte. Zwischen den drei letzteren ergaben sich keine signifikanten Unterschiede. The blood concentration of lidocaine was studied in 22 patients with continuous epidural blockade, using 0.4 per cent lidocaine (Xylocain®) drip for postoperative pain relief after cholecystectomy. In 12 patients with thoracic blockade, mean infusion dose rate was 3.2 ±0.1 mg/h.kg, and in 10 patients with thoraco‐lumbar blockade 4.5±0.3 mg/h.lg body weight. Mean infusion time was 38 hours. A ‘steady state’ blood concentration of lidocaine of 4–5 μg/ml was not reached until after about 38 hours in both groups. After the end of the infusion the lidocaine, concentration in the blood reached half of the ‘steady state’ value after 2–3 hours. After about 4 hours the elimination was definitely slower. Signs of central nervous system toxicity were seen at blood concentrations of about 6 μg/ml, which occasionally occurred following superimposed bolus injections of 2

Effects of anesthetics on cardiac arrhythmias during parasleep were investigated in four cats. Parasleep was still observed under light anesthesia (80 % nitrous oxide, 0.5 % methoxyflurane and 0.5 % halothane), and cardiac arrhythmias occurred. When the concentration of anesthetics was increased (1.0 % methoxyflurane, 1.0 % halothane), parasleep was never observed. Cardiac arrhythmias did not occur during deep anesthesia. Judging from these results, parasleep must be regarded as one of the etiological factors in the development of cardiac arrhythmias during light anesthesia.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGBei vier Katzen wurde die Wirkung von Anaesthetika auf Herzarrhythmien im Halbschlaf untersucht. In oberflächlicher Narkose (80 % N2O, 0,5 % Methoxyfluran und 0,5 % Halothan) wurde noch Halbschlaf beobachtet und gleichzeitig kamen Arrhythmien vor. Wenn die Konzentration der Anaesthesie erhöht wurde (1 % Methoxyfluran und 1 % Halothan), wurde Halbschlaf nie beobachtet. Während tiefer Narkose kamen Herzarrhythmien nicht vor. Nach diesen Resultaten zu schließen muß Halbschlaf als einer der ätiologischen Faktoren für das Zustandekommen von Herzarrhythmien in oberflächlicher Narkose angesehen
