摘要:
In this paper we discuss the absence of true long-range order (Landau-Peierls instability) in smectic liquid crystals, which is a direct consequence of the strong thermal fluctuations associated with ordering in less than three dimensions. While the resultant X-ray lineshape has been confirmed already quite some time ago, recently some new aspects have been discovered. In the first place, thanks to modern synchrotron sources, the spectral dependence of the fluctuations in freely suspended smectic films has been determined down to molecular dimensions. While at long wavelengths top and bottom of a film fluctuate in unison, at shorter wavelengths a cross-over to independent fluctuations could be observed. Secondly, in smectic elastomers the stability of the layered structure against fluctuations is dramatically enhanced by the crosslinked architecture. As a result the usual Landau-Peierls instability is no longer observed. Hence we have found the first evidence for existence of long range translational order in soft ‘1-D’ layered systems embedded in 3-D space.

摘要:
The 17th International Liquid Crystal Confernce was held in Strasbourg, France from 19–24 July 1998. It was organized by all colleagues in Strasbourg involved in liquid crystal research with Antoine Skoulios as Conference Chairman, Daniel Guillon as Secretary, Stephane Mery and Paul Masson as Treasurers. This year, the ILCC attracted 897 participants, including 52 accompanying persons, from 38 countries. The largest representation of 130 delegates was from Japan followed by 118 from Germany, 115 from France, 94 from the UK and 77 from the USA. The scientific activities were structured around 10 main topics divided between 3 parallel sessions and 841 posters. The scientific report which follows has been written by Professor G. W. Gray and contains most of the highlights which were indicated to him by different experts on each of the coference topics.

摘要:
The Otto Lehman Foundation was established in 1997 by Professors Mlynski and Knoll from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. The mission of the foundation is to promote scientific contributions from the rising generation of scientists in the field of liquid crystals. The prize can be given for outstanding habilitations, doctoral theses and graduate work in fields of liquid crystal science making a significant contribution to the application of liquid crystals.
