摘要:
In liquid crystal science the phenomenon of chirality has often played an important role in the context of phase structures or as an origin of symmetry breaking. Fundamental questions about ‘chirality’ in the context of liquid crystal properties have not been widely discussed or taken into account in the development of suitable concepts. For example, the questions of whether or not the spontaneous polarization or the circular dichroism (CD) with a light beam propagating obliquely to the optical axis of the phase is a chirality observation, have never been asked. With the report in 1996 of chiral liquid crystal phases [1], formed from achiral ‘banana-shaped compounds’, a new era of discussion dawned. Many questions are now raised which seem to be trivial, but are also fundamental, e.g. can a commercial CD instrument measure CD of an anisotropic and inhomogeneous phase without artifacts or whether or not a measured CD is an unequivocal proof for the existence of a chiral structure.

摘要:
Liquid crystals composed of bent molecules exhibit smectic-like phases including und-ulated or two-dimensional ones which are unlike the smectic phases fromed from normal calamitic molecules [1]. These phases are not miscible with any smectic phases of calamitic compounds, which emphasizes their distinctness, although it must be remembered that immiscibility is not a criterion for a new phase type. Until the true character of these phases is established, it has been proposed (Workshop on Banana-shaped Liquid Crystals, December 1997, Berlin) that the phases be labelled with the code letters B1…B7in the sequence of the their discovery.

摘要:
Structural studies of blue phases (BP) which exist just below the clearing point in low-pitch cholesterogenic systems have attracted the attention of numerous groups during the past two decades. The optical isotropy of BPs is nowadays well understood in terms of a cubic lattice structure of defects, and evidence for this is derived from experimental results [1, 2] as well as from theoretical studies [3].

摘要:
It is with deep regret that we bring to the attention of the liquid crystal community the untimely death, on 20 October 1998, of Pier Luigi Nordio, Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at Padova University (Italy), and author of many important contributions to the theory of liquid crystals.

摘要:
Professor Frank Leslie presented the G. W. Gray Medal to Professor Roy Sambles of Exeter University, UK at the annual British Liquid Crystal Society Conference which took place in Leeds in April 1998. The George Gray Medal is awarded from time to time to eminent scientists in the field of liquid crystals by the British Liquid Crystal Society, and previous recipients include Professor John Goodby and Professor Frank Leslie.
