摘要:
When considering the possibility of commercially viable applications for discotic liquid crystals it is worth noting that in the case of calamitic liquid crystals some 80 to 90 years elapsed between their discovery in 1888 and their first application in displays. Since discotic mesophases were only discovered in 1977 [ll, it is not surprising that the first applications are yet to be realized.

At ALCOM's international symposium on 12 – 13 October, 1995, over 100 participants gathered in beautiful Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to discuss current developments in dynamics and defects in liquid crystals and to honour Professor Alfred Saupe on the occasion of his 70th birthday. ALCOM, the US National Science Foundation and Technology Center on Advanced liquid Crystalline Optical Materials, is a consortium of Kent State, Case Western Reserve and Akron Universities.

摘要:
The Fifth Biannual International Conference on Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals was hosted by Professor William A. Crossland at Cambridge University. Consisting of plenary and invited lectures, oral and poster presentations, demonstrations and a final panel discussion, the conference was attended by about 300 delegates from 26 countries around the world. The event was kindly supported by the International Liquid Crystal Society, British Liquid Crystal Society, SID, IEE, GEC Marconi, Sharp Laboratories Europe and Thorn EM1 CRL. The proceedings for FLC 95 will appear in a feature issue of the journal Ferroelectn'cs published by Gordon and Breach.

摘要:
Unlike most organic materials, liquid crystals respond readily to magnetic fields. This response originates in the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility of nematics, and the relative ease with which they undergo orientational deformations. Because of the large optical birefringence of liquid crystals, these orientational deformations are easy to observe. An interesting demonstration is to place a small rare earth magnet on a nematic cell between crossed polarizers which is illuminated from below. As the magnetic field reorients the liquid crystal, beautiful interference colours appear, indicating director deformations.

摘要:
Two categories of liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) should be distinguished. On the one hand we have side-chain LCPs, where the mesogenic groups are attached to a polymer backbone, and on the other hand we have main-chain LCPs where the polymer chain itself contains the mesogenic groups. In the latter case we may either have a continuous semiflexible polymer chain or an alternating sequence of rigid aromatic mesogens and flexible aliphatic spacers. In Fig. 1 the various types of polymer liquid crystal are shown with some possible chemical structures.
