摘要:
Perhaps one of the most surprising results in the past 10 years was the prediction of Brand etal.[1] that fluid biaxial smectics made from comopunds without asymmetric carbons could, by symmetry, have a spontaneous polarization, P, in the layer plane. They called this construct, which can be either ferroelectric or antiferroelectric, smectic C9. Advances gained from their prediction include the development of highly efficient electrets for broad-band telecommunications [2, 3] as well as a basic non-linear model [4] for TLAFs,thresholdless antiferroelectrics[5], now seen in beatiful, CMOS compatible, active matrix liquid crystal displays [6] (figure 1).

摘要:
The blue phases are, to those liquid crystal scientists who have not studied them, a somewhat obscure and esoteric branch of the field. However to those who have had a chance to see them in a microscope glowing with an iridescent multitude of colours and to study them in depth, they represent some of the most beatiful and complex of the liquid crystal phases.

摘要:
TheSixth International Symposium on Metallomesogenswas held at the beautiful site of Rotenburg in the valley of the Fulda river in the heart of Hesse (Germany). It provided the forum for the state of the art in this increasing area of liquid crystal research. The symposium was carefully and pleasantly organized by Professor W. Haase and members of his team, namely M. A. Athanassopoulou, K. Falk and R. Werner, Darmstadt University of Technology. The members of the Program Committee and the Symposium Co-Chairs were W. Haase (Darmstadt University of Technology), G. Lattermann (Bayreuth University) and K. Praefcke (Berlin University of Technology).

摘要:
This event marked the 10th anniversary of the first workshop on this topic in Bayreuth, which initiated a bi-annual series on pattern formation in complex systems which took place in Kitakyushu, Santa Fe, Copenhagen and Budapest. Some of the topics discussed are reported below (see also www.phy.uni-bayreuth.de/-ptlc/).

摘要:
Over the past fifteen years the International Topical Conference on Optics of Liquid Crystals (OLC) has provided a stimulating and interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of the best new work in the field of liquid crystals and related materials. TheVIIIth International Topical Meeting on Optics of Liquid Crystalswas held at the hotel Wyndham Palmas del Mar Resort and Villas in Humacao, Puerto Rico 27 September–1 October 1999. Eighty-five scientists from 17 different countries around the globe (Asia, Europe, North and South America) came to Puerto Rico to present their scientific work and to discuss all the modern aspects of Optics of Liquid Crystals. As a result 21 invited talks, 32 contributed oral presentations and 51 posters were presented. New results at the forefront of research in the optics of liquid crystals were presnted by leading experts in the field. Invited talks given by N. Clark (USA), F. Derrien (France), B. Jerome (Netherlands), R. Kamien (USA), I.-C. Khoo (USA), L. Komitov, (Sweden), T. Lubensky (USA), S. Marino (Japan), I. Musevich (Slovenia), Y. Shen (USA), K. Singer (USA), G. Sinha (USA), H. Skupin (Germany), R. Stannarius (Germany), R. L. Sutherland (USA), B. Taheri (USA), Y. Tabe (Japan), C. Umeton (Italy), D. Weitz (USA), S. Zilker (Germany), and S. Zumer (Slovenia) covered different important topics such as chiral interactions, surface vibrational spectroscopy, time resolved FTIR, holograms in PDLS, lasing in liquid crystals, quadrupolar molecular nonlinear optics, organic photorefractive systems, optical solitons, different aspects of behaviour, properties and applications of chiral smectic liquid crystals, photo-initiated reorientational dynamics, electro-optic effects in LC films, wave generation in two-dimensional LCs and others.
