AbstractVisual color tolerances were calculated from observations made on difference pairs around a single green color center. The comparison was made between observations done for actual acrylic‐lacquer samples and a simulation of the sample pairs on a computer‐controlled CRT display. A light booth with simulated daylight was used to illuminate the surface colors and to provide surround illumination for the CRT. The luminances of the CRT and light booth were equalized at 150 cd/m2. Fifteen observers judged color differences relative to a near‐gray anchor pair under three different conditions: CRT stimuli viewed with a dark surround, CRT stimuli viewed with a light surround generated by the light booth, and the surface colors. Probit analyses were used to transform population responses to estimates of equivalent color tolerances to the anchor pair, fiducial (confidence) limits about the tolerances, and population standard deviations. Observations were less precise (higher standard deviations) for CRT stimuli. This statistically significant difference was presumed due to differences in spatial and cognitive attributes. Despite these differences, observers' color tolerance determinations were not statistically different from one another or from previous experiments of the same color center but judged under a luminance three times higher than the current experiment. AbstractA mathematical model of chromatic adaptation for calculating corresponding colors across changes of illumination based on the Hunt color appearance model is formulated and tested. This model consists of a modified von Kries transform that accounts for incomplete levels of adaptation. The model predicts that adaptation will be less complete as the saturation of the adapting stimulus increases and more complete as the luminance of the adapting stimulus increases. An experiment is described in which achromatic appearance is measured for various adapting conditions. The model is tested with these experimental results as well as results from another study and found to be significantly better at predicting corresponding colors than other proposed models.

AbstractChromatic induction was measured in terms of the wavelength of a central 1°, unique yellow field surrounded by annuli that varied in wavelength, area, contrast, and overall retinal illuminance. In the first experiment, a 1.3° surround was varied from approximately 470 to 670 nm, using an overall illuminance range from 0.5 to 4.0 log trolands. The illuminance contrast between the center and surround was 1.0 (i.e., isoluminant). The results indicated that the wavelength of unique yellow shifted in the direction of the wavelength of the surround at all intensities. The magnitude of the shift, however, decreased with increasing intensity for middle‐ and long‐wavelength surrounds. The latter result was not expected from previous research. Experiment 2 tested the hypothesis that this might be due to a Bezold‐Brücke effect in which the hue of the surround changes with increasing retinal illuminance. The relative influence of Bezold‐Brücke hue shifts on chromatic induction was manipulated by changing surround area and luminance contrast. AbstractColor theory has been worked up by some researchers in order to consider factors such as transparence, brightness, opacity, etc., but no color order system has been devised to include these variables in addition to the usual three. This work proposes to treat these factors as theoretically separate from color (even if they are related with it), developing an order system for them. When it is taken parallel to color, this system helps to describe all the visual perceptions produced by light stimuli.
