AbstractMany formulas for predicting perceived color differences require that three terms be squared prior to the extraction of the square root of their sums. Two of these terms relate to chromatic differences measured along tritan and red‐green axes. AbstractThis article summarizes the work of TC‐1.4 of the CIE in its attempt to improve the measurement of the quantity of light. It has become apparent in recent years that there are a number of instances in which two lights that measure the same do not look equally bright or have the same effectiveness for vision. These inconsistencies stem directly from our definition of light, radiant power evaluated by V(Λ), the luminous efficiency function of the human eye. since under certain conditions the use of this function to evaluate spectral irradiance may be inappropriate. A number of examples of the incorrect use of V(Λ) are given and particular emphasis is placed upon the evaluation of self‐luminous colored displays. AbstractThe spectral power distribution of CIE standard source C, originally adopted in 1931, has not been determined in modern times to our knowledge. This measurement has now been carried out using the NBS high‐accuracy reference spectrophotometer. In the 50 years since 1931, improved purity of chemicals and improvements in measurement capability have resulted in disfferences between the experimental spectral power distribution and that tabulated as CIE illuminant C. These differences average 1.8% over the entire wavelength range studied, 350‐770 nm; they average only 0.5% below 630 nm but 4.5% (maximum, 6.7%) above 640 nm, where the power of experimental source C is always higher than that of illuminant C. AbstractThis article compares color preferences with a context to color preferences without it, using chips of 50 colors and the shape of an automobile as the context. Subjects were asked to make preference judgments of the color chips with the shape and also without it in the experiment. Multi‐ variate analyses were performed on the two sets of data to deriue latent spaces of color preference with and without the context. Through interpretation and comparison of the derived spaces, it was found that there was a noticeable context effect between the preference judgment

AbstractTwo‐constant Kubelka‐Munk formalism was used to describe the color of blends of precolored nylon fibers. Pseudo‐Kubelka‐Munk absorption constants K and pseudo‐Kubelka‐Munk scattering constants S were calculated using masstone samples and blends of colored fiber with white. A masstone means 100% colored fiber in which no white or black is mixed. Various mixtures with white were tried and no systematic dependence of the calculated optical parameters on composition was discernable. With some colors, notably yellow and orange, mixtures with black were required for the calibration. Accurate color matches were obtained using the two‐constant formalism especially when the proposed match contained the same primary fibers as did the standard. For matches in which the primary fibers used in the sample differed from those in the standard, the closeness of the visual match depended on how closely the primary colors in the sample resembled those in the standard. Since the eye can discern individual colors in a fiber blend, it was possible to have a visual mismatch despite colorimetric equivalence. With a large enough group of primary colors, it was generally possible to find one or more alternative formulations which matched the standard. Sample‐preparation and measurement errors were found to be critical for determining color‐matching accuracy. All of the color‐matching error could be accounted for in terms of the sample‐preparation and measurement errors alone.
