AbstractCategorical color perception has previously been tested using a naming method, and the data from 27 subjects so examined in several experiments have been combined to yield a “categorical color difference index” (CCDI) that can be computed for any pair of colors in the OSA set of 424 samples. A new experiment is performed in which categorical color perception is encouraged without the explicit use of names by allowing 10 seconds to elapse between the presentation of two stimuli before they are judged same or different. All of the colors being compared are either identical or nearest neighbors in the orange region of the OSA space. Nearest neighbors, which are separated by 2 OSA units, clearly differ when presented simultaneously; with the delay, errors (“same” responses) sometimes occur. These errors decrease as CCDI increases, suggesting that categorization occurs when colors must be remembered. AbstractPublished data on the dependence of hue on luminance (the Bezold‐Brücke effect) is analysed in terms of changes of hue angle instead of changes in wavelength so as to assess their visual importance. For unrelated colours, for a given monochromatic wavelength, the changes in hue caused by altering the luminance vary appreciably according to whether the colours are seen side‐by‐side continuously, or side‐by‐side in flashes, or one‐at‐a‐time in flashes. For related colours, for a given chromaticity, the changes in hue caused by changing the luminance factor are examined in the Munsell and NCS systems; although systematic variations occur, they are different in the two systems, and in neither case is there any similarity to the situation for unrelated colours. Changes in illuminance on related colours do not seem to have any systematic effect on hue for a given chromaticity. AbstractA new color space is developed, based on a model of a trigonally symmetric, planar arrangement of three response vectors, which first separates a visual stimulus via tristimulus values into achromatic and chromatic components and then recombines them. Because three visual response vectors are mutually opposed, the model is called the mutually opposed, trichromatic response (MOTR) model. The MOTR model does not introduce any new visual concepts but rather uses established concepts in an empirically different way. The MOTR model directly represents a color as a combination of two chromatic primaries and one achromatic primary. It is, therefore, particularly useful for halftone color reproduction based on two primary colors plus black, sometimes referred to as 100% GCR (gray component replacement). It is useful also because of its linearity properties between lightness and the chromatic and achromatic contents. The MOTR model's color space is applicable to existing color‐order systems and provides a graphic representation often better than CIELAB and CIELUV do. The MOTR model is also consistent with many known visual characteristics such as unique hues, illuminant adaptation, wavelength discrimination, and defective color vision. AbstractInter‐instrument color measurement errors of up to 2 CIELAB units are typically introduced in the process of numerically integrating spectrophotometric data to obtain tristimulus values. These errors arise partly from inadequacies in the definition of the tristimulus values themselves, but mainly from failing to take into account the effect the instrument function has on the spectrophotometric data. Through using precise definition of the tristimulus values and through using source‐observer weighting tables tailored to each specific instrument, it is practical to reduce this component of colorimetric error to less than 0.1 CIELAB unit for spectrophotometers with bandwidths up to 20
